Commentary on the Thirty Verses, Admonishing the Gods. Commentary on the Thirty Verses. Admonishing the Gods. In Sanskrit: Tringshika Tika. In Tibetan: Commentary on the Thirty Verses. Volume One. Homage to youthful Manjushri. To the Muni who truly knows the selflessness of phenomena and persons, who has abandoned all faults, I pay homage to the master of compassion. Whoever constantly strives for the benefit of others, and whose own benefit is achieved incidentally, I pay homage to that seeker of beings, and will explain the Thirty Verses. For those who do not understand or misunderstand the selflessness of persons and phenomena, this first verse establishes the five objects: object, connection, subject matter, purpose, and entity. The connection, subject matter, and purpose of the treatise must be stated first without fail. Otherwise, a treatise without connection, subject matter, or purpose will not be accepted by listeners who are predisposed to doubt. Therefore, these three should be stated to generate joy in the audience. Among them, "regarding the selflessness of persons and phenomena" indicates the object. "For those who do not understand or misunderstand" states the connection. "The selflessness of persons and phenomena without distortion" shows the subject matter. "Because of reliance" expresses the purpose. "The treatise on the Thirty Verses of Consciousness-Only is composed" indicates the relationship. Among these, the subject matter is to explain the selflessness of persons and phenomena without distortion through reason and scripture. Understanding it is the purpose. Since that purpose is accomplished by this treatise, this treatise is the means to this purpose. Therefore, the treatise and the purpose are related by the nature of means and what arises from the means. To dispel the doubt of "to whom will the selflessness of persons and phenomena be explained without distortion?", it is said, "for those who do not understand or misunderstand." To eliminate the doubt of "what is not understood and what is misunderstood?", it is shown by "the selflessness of persons and phenomena."

The meaning of 'ga' is collection, and it is to explain the meaning of branches. As for the term 'non-self of person and phenomena,' persons and phenomena are just persons and phenomena. Because of gathering and leaking, it is called a person, because it accumulates previously non-existent karma. Because the previously done karma is fully used up and exhausted, it is called leaking. Because one goes again and again to that same place, it is again a person. Or, because one goes by the actions of increasing or maturing, and propelling and completing, it is called a person. Because they hold their own essence, they are called phenomena. Like this, that which is devoid of self is non-self, and its entity is non-self. Non-self and non-self is non-self, and non-self in persons and phenomena is non-self of person and phenomena. Therefore, those are the non-self of person and phenomena. The term 'non-understanding and wrong understanding' is a combination of the terms 'non-understanding' and 'wrong understanding.' The term 'non-understanding' refers to those who do not understand the non-self of person and phenomena. Those with wrong understanding are of two types: some wrongly understand the non-self of person and phenomena, those who are called 'inverted.' Some understand in two ways, those who are called 'doubting.' Therefore, it will be explained to those who are ignorant, inverted, and have minds of doubt. The phrase 'in order to explain the non-self of person and phenomena without inversion' means to combine the words 'non-self of person and phenomena' in a non-inverted way, and it is a collection of words for the purpose of explaining those two. Some wrongly believe in the non-self of the person, such as those who are respected by all, they believe in non-self, but not in the absence of a person. Some also wrongly believe in the non-self of phenomena, such as the Madhyamikas. They do not believe that phenomena are non-existent in all aspects, it is said that they do not believe that they are non-existent in the nature of imputation. Therefore, as an antidote to that, one should explain the non-self of phenomena and person without inversion, therefore the term 'without inversion' is mentioned.
