Therefore, how are forms, sounds, etc., and the six objects, etc., thus it was spoken. The word "abode" in "place of mental ease" refers here to being in accordance with or the cause. The rest is easy to understand, so it is not explained. The summary of the above-mentioned content is for easy remembrance and mastery. Thus, a chapter is concluded, and for the purpose of starting another chapter, it is said, "This should be considered," etc. When the five consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, etc., simultaneously encounter the conditions of the object, does only one consciousness arise from the alaya consciousness, and not two or more? To explain that this view exists, it is said, "For example, some think," etc. The Sutra school, etc., believes that two or more consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously because there is no immediately preceding condition. Therefore, only one consciousness will arise. They think that if multiple consciousnesses arise simultaneously, one consciousness cannot be the immediately preceding condition for multiple consciousnesses. To explain the second view, it is said, "However, it is not certain," etc. If one encounters one condition, then only one consciousness will arise. But if one encounters two or more conditions, then at that time two or more consciousnesses will also arise, which is the former view. Those who hold the sectarian view say, "The five arise from the root consciousness." etc. The five consciousnesses will arise from the root consciousness as they are, sometimes simultaneously and sometimes sequentially. For example, just as waves arise in water according to conditions, this is the brief meaning. The meaning of the words is a prerequisite for understanding these meanings, therefore, to explain the meaning of the words, it is said, "The five," etc., because the meaning is easy to understand, it is not explained. Someone may wonder what the root consciousness is and why it is called that, because the five are the place of the Dharma, etc.

It is said: Thus, the ālaya-vijñāna is the place of the seeds of the five vijñānas. Thus, it also causes beings to fully take birth. Therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna is called the root vijñāna. Because it arises from there, it is the place of the seeds, it is the cause. In order to show conformity with the conditions, it is said, "From what kind of condition?" etc. Because it is easy to understand, it is not explained. The sound of obtaining self shows birth. This "together or not" shows simultaneous and gradual. If one wonders how simultaneous and gradual arise, it is like waves in water. It is said, "Like waves in water," etc. Because it is easy to understand, it is not explained. If one wonders where this metaphor comes from, it is said, "As it is said, one with vast intelligence, for example," etc. The Blessed One called the Bodhisattva with vast intelligence and spoke these metaphors. Cause is shown as the sound of flowing. Cessation is shown as the sound of interruption. Complete exhaustion is shown as the sound of exhaustion. The remaining meaning of the summary is not explained because it is easy to understand. In order to strongly prove that the ālaya-vijñāna is the same as a river, it is said, "For this second source, it is called a verse," etc. The grasping consciousness is deep and subtle, like a river, it enters at all times. It is also the place of all seeds. If individual beings cling to the ālaya-vijñāna as self, that is not allowed, so among the retinue of individual beings, I have not shown it. Because it is not the realm of children, it is deep. Because it is not the realm of the noble ones either, it is subtle. Thus, for the time being, the scriptures have shown that many consciousnesses arise simultaneously, and in order to show it from the lineage as well, The objective condition of consciousness, as it is determined separately, it is said, "The objective condition of consciousness, as it is determined separately," etc. Just as the objective conditions of eye consciousness, etc., are determined separately, the form of eye consciousness, and similarly, the sound itself of ear consciousness, etc., just like eye consciousness, etc.
