When the mind is neither dull nor agitated, it is called equanimity, and this is the very nature of mental equanimity. To show that the mind abides in its true state, it is said, "There is no manifest activity," and so on. After the equanimity of mind, without needing to force it, whatever enters into equanimity in accordance with the yoga of abiding in mental equanimity, that is the very abiding of the mind in its true state. At that time, will the yogi still experience the faults of inequality, such as dullness and agitation? Such doubts may arise, because such equanimity is newly attained and requires prolonged practice, so doubts may exist. To show the spontaneous accomplishment of the mind, it is said, "When meditation becomes extraordinary," and so on. After that, when meditation becomes extraordinary, its opposing factors, dullness and agitation, are far removed, so the doubt of inequality does not arise. Therefore, the yogi does not strive for the causes that are antidotes to dullness and agitation, such as extreme joy and complete weariness. The yogi does not strive, and when the mind abides in spontaneous accomplishment, it is called the very nature of spontaneous accomplishment of the mind. To show this function, it is said, "This is," and so on. This function is the basis for not distinguishing the occasions of all afflictions and near afflictions. If one wonders what non-harming is, then non-harming is the antidote to harming, so it is said. To dispel it, it is said, "Killing and binding," and so on. Not harming sentient beings with causes of harm such as killing and binding, because there is no mutual harm, it is called harming, and this is compassion for sentient beings. To accomplish this, it is said, "Eliminating comfort is compassion," and so on. The word "comfort" refers to happiness, thus showing the elimination of happiness. "Eliminating" means abandoning. If one wonders how this is known, then it is said, "The compassionate one is," and so on.

Sarva said, "Like this, whoever has compassion will be saddened by all the sufferings of others. Therefore, compassion eliminates happiness. To explain this function, it is said, 'This is not someone who is suitable for strenuous activities,' meaning that this function is not suitable for the mind. To connect with the following, it is said, 'The eleven virtues have been explained,' meaning that this meaning is just a connecting word. To explain the afflictions, it is said, 'The afflictions are desire, anger, ignorance, etc.' To explain the collection of words, it is said, 'Desire and,' etc., meaning that this meaning is just a connecting word. If you want to know what desire is, it is said, 'Regarding desire, it is,' etc., meaning that clinging especially to samsara and enjoyment, and longing, is called desire. One clings especially to what is happening now, and longs for the future. To explain this function, it is said, 'That is the function of producing all suffering.' To explain it, it is said, 'Suffering here,' etc., because it has three kinds of suffering. The five aggregates are considered to be suffering in the three realms as appropriate. Through it, one is either born in the three realms, or the karma of samsara arises, so it is called 'grasping.' Grasping produces or arises depending on it, or arises from those grasping, so it is called 'aggregates of grasping.' That aggregate is manifested by the power of craving for desire, form, and formlessness, therefore, the function of desire is said to produce all suffering. If you want to know what anger is, it is said, 'Anger is universally harboring malice towards all sentient beings,' etc., meaning that universally harboring malice towards sentient beings, and having a rough mind towards sentient beings, and if suppressed, thinking of harming sentient beings by killing and binding, etc., that is anger. To explain this function, it is said, 'That is,' etc. To explain it, it is said, 'Contact is happiness,' etc.

That was not explained because it is easy to understand. If you ask how to know, it is said, "If there is a mind of universal torment," and so on. Like this, if there is a mind of hatred, suffering and unpleasantness will inevitably arise constantly. If that arises constantly, it will cause the mind to feel pain. If the mind feels pain, because it changes accordingly, the body will also feel pain. Therefore, that person will be in a state of suffering and poverty in all actions. Whatever mind is hostile is no different from any misdeed. Therefore, as it is said, that is the act of anger. If you ask what is ignorance, it is said, "Ignorance is the evil realms, etc." Whatever does not understand the evil realms, etc., that is ignorance. The non-inverted connection with cause and effect is wanting good results and not wanting bad results, which is precisely not inverted. To explain this function, it is said, "This is," and so on. To dispel it, it is said, "The nature of afflictions, karma, and birth is," and so on. The nature of afflictions, the nature of karma, and the nature of birth are the three universal afflictions. Among these three universal afflictions, from the former universal affliction as the cause, the nature of the latter universal affliction is obtained, which is called arising. To understand the basis of arising, it should be understood like this: like this, if one becomes deluded, then perverse views and other universal afflictions will arise, and if one does not become deluded, they will not arise. If you ask what is pride, it is said, "Pride is." To dispel it, it is said, "Pride," and so on. All pride arises dependent on the view of the aggregates. Its essence is the essence of a conceited mind. If you ask why it is said that the view of the aggregates is the abode of pride, it is said, "Like this, regarding the aggregates," and so on. Like this, regarding the aggregates, falsely clinging to them as self or the nature of self, thinking, "This is me, I am clever," or "This is mine, I am...
