In short, the five are definitive. Why are they said to be definitive? Because it says "for the differentiated" and so on. Like this, they are definitive for the differentiated, therefore they are called definitive. Like this, their object is only the differentiated, not everything. Someone might ask, what is "desire"? To this, it says "desire is" and so on, that is, for the object of thought, any wish is desire. Mentioning "thought" is to clearly point out the object, just as desire does not arise without thought. Someone might ask, what kind of thought? To this, it says "seeing" and so on, because it is easy to understand, so it is not explained. In order to explain other names for desire, it says "to this, seeing" and so on, anything mentioned as seeing, hearing, etc., is desire and wanting. In order to explain its function, it says "that is initiating diligence" and so on, its function is to approach the cause of initiating diligence, this is a summary statement. Someone might ask, what is "faith"? To this, it says "faith is for the definitive object" and so on, in short, for the object that has been completely seen through valid cognition, any trust is faith. Someone might ask, why mention "definitive"? To this, it says "mentioning definitive" and so on, because it is easy to understand, so it is not explained. Someone might ask, what is this "definitive" like? To this, it says "through reason or credible testimony" and so on, any object that has been undoubtedly ascertained through direct perception, inference, or credible testimony, is definitive. For any object, the state of that object that is definitive in the manner of impermanence, etc., the mind abides on that object, and definitely thinks "this is so, and not otherwise", any such grasping is faith. In order to explain its function, it says "that is the nature of not being taken away" and so on, its function is not being taken away by the established tenet, this is a summary statement. If asked, how is this its function? Therefore, it says "cherishing faith" and so on.

In this way, cherishing faith, the opponents of external paths cannot take away one's own tenets, therefore it is effective. If you want to know what mindfulness is, then mindfulness is not forgetting familiar things, and so on. For things previously experienced, the mind does not diminish, and what manifests, that is mindfulness. If you want to know what a familiar thing is like, then a familiar thing is what has been previously experienced, which is easy to understand, so it is not explained. If you want to know why mindfulness is called non-forgetting, then it is like holding onto the object of focus, and so on. Like this, holding onto the object of focus has previously occurred, the reason for not being exhausted is mindfulness, therefore it is called non-forgetting. Therefore, because it is the cause of non-forgetting, it is shown as non-forgetting. In order to show the self-nature of recollection, it is said that things previously grasped, and so on. For things previously grasped, recollection also makes the aspect of the object of focus remembered, that is recollection itself. In order to explain the condition of things for one's own purpose, it is said that recollection is unique, and so on, which is easy to understand, so it is not explained. In order to explain the function of this, it is said that it is, and so on. The function of this is not to be distracted from the object of focus, like this, when the mind manifests on the object of focus, the mind will not be distracted to other objects of focus or other aspects. Therefore, mindfulness is called having the function of non-distraction. If you want to know what samadhi is, then it is said that samadhi is for the object of investigation, and so on. For the object that should be investigated, the one-pointedness of mind is samadhi. If you want to know why it is called investigation, then it is said that the object of investigation is what should be investigated for its merits or faults. For the truth of cessation and the truth of the path, one should investigate the aspects of peace and excellence, and so on, as merits. For the truth of suffering and the truth of origin, one should investigate the aspects of impermanence, and so on, as faults. For these, the object of focus is unique.
