It approaches in a way that unites happiness and well-being. For example, there, name and form arise in mutual dependence, like pillars of a house. Since it is free from desire for form, in the formless realm, form does not manifestly ripen. Therefore, there, the four aggregates called "name" accomplish each other and approach in a way that unites happiness. There, it is not that all form is completely absent, but rather it is only the time of habituation, not the time when form ripens. Thus, after explaining the proximate cause, in order to show its unreasonableness, it is said, "Because it is not possible to recognize that cause as this," and so on. Because it is not possible to recognize that proximate cause as this, it is said to be unreasonable. "This" is like clinging to self. After explaining the unreasonable cause, in order to explain the aspect of the place, it is said, "The aspect of the place is," and so on. The aspect of the place refers to the aspect of the dwelling of the vessel world, which is called the aspect of the place here. In order to show its unreasonableness, it is said, "It also arises in a way that the object and aspect are completely uninterrupted," and so on. The aspect of the place that has been explained also arises in this way, with the object and aspect completely uninterrupted, therefore it is said to be unreasonable. Furthermore, in order to refute the Sautrantika, it is said, "How does consciousness exist in a way that the object and aspect are completely uninterrupted?" Who would believe in consciousness that exists in a way that the object and aspect are completely uninterrupted? Because consciousness exists at all times in the nature of the aspect of the object, which is the self-nature of self-awareness, then how can it exist uninterruptedly in the object and aspect? In order to prove that the fault is the same, it is said, "This is what other proponents of consciousness say," and so on. Those other proponents of consciousness who only accept the six consciousnesses and do not accept the alaya-consciousness, such as the Sautrantikas, this refutation is the same at the time of cessation meditation and so on. In cessation and unconscious meditation,

How does it happen that during times such as these, the object and appearance of mental consciousness are not entirely clear? If others were to say that there is no other consciousness at that time, that is incorrect. Therefore, it is said, "During times such as cessation," etc. During times such as entering into cessation, it is not possible to realize that there is no consciousness, and it is said, "It is not possible to realize." Why is it not possible? It is said, "Because it contradicts the object and contradicts the scriptures." If at that time all consciousness were entirely absent, from where would it arise when rising from that samadhi? The body with the senses is not a seed because it is of a different kind. It is unreasonable to arise without a seed; this is logic. It also contradicts the Sutra of Dharma Giving, because it says that consciousness does not depart from the body. To lay the foundation for the verses, it is said, "Among them, the alaya-consciousness is," etc. It is not explained because it is easy to understand. Thus, the number is asked, the time is asked, and constant contact and attention, etc., are spoken of. To liberate it, it is said, "Constant," etc. As long as the alaya-consciousness exists, these five ever-present dharmas, such as contact, are inseparably associated with it. In order to fully establish the word "knowing," it is said, "Contact is feeling." The word "contact" here is intended to indicate the action that comes from feeling. If you wonder what this contact is, it is said, "Among them, contact is," etc. When the three—sense faculty, object, and consciousness—come together and cut off the change of the sense faculty, that is called contact. To show its function, it is said, "It is the basis of feeling, having the function." Contact becomes the object of the basis of feeling; this is its function. If you wonder what these three are, it is said, "The three—sense faculty, object, and consciousness—are the three themselves." The meaning is merely a combination of words. If you wonder what the gathering is, it is considered to be the object of cause and effect.
