For the Alaya-vijñana, whichever of the ripened imprints and the similar-cause imprints increases, that is called the cause transformation. The Alaya-vijñana of completely matured imprints is called the synonym of cause transformation. The history of Yogacharas has three types: Some say that it produces imprints that did not exist before. Others say that imprints are always present, and are only completely matured by all the afflicted dharmas, and after being completely matured, they can realize its fruit. Others think that they can both completely mature the previously existing imprints and produce imprints that did not exist before. This is an aspect that the commentators have not determined. In order to show the second transformation, therefore, it is said "fruit transformation" and so on. In the similar category of previous karma, where the Alaya-vijñana is thrown, there it is completely fulfilled, and obtaining the arising of ripened imprints, in other similar categories, the Alaya-vijñana manifests and achieves, that is the fruit transformation. Similarly, after obtaining the arising of similar-cause imprints, the entering consciousnesses and the afflicted mind manifest and achieve from the Alaya-vijñana, that is the fruit transformation. The word "obtaining arising" refers to the ability to immediately produce the fruit. So, which of these three transformations of consciousness produces which imprint? Therefore, it is said, "Therefore, the entering virtuous and non-virtuous consciousness" and so on. The entering virtuous and non-virtuous consciousness, in order to realize the ripened fruit, therefore produces ripened imprints in the Alaya-vijñana. Apart from that, in order to realize virtuous and non-virtuous consciousness, therefore it produces similar-cause imprints, and by its power, similar minds will arise in this life and the next. The entering unspecified consciousness and the afflicted mind, these two, in order to realize the fruit similar to themselves, therefore only produce similar-cause imprints. The root of the Compendium of Determinations.

Furthermore, it was said, "What are the three transformations that are spoken of?" etc. Merely showing the number does not reveal the distinctions. Therefore, in order to show the distinctions, to show the three transformations spoken of by their own names, it was said, "Maturation, self-grasping, and." In order to refute it, it was said, "Those three aspects of transformation are," etc. Since it is easy to understand, it was not explained. In order to briefly show the self-nature of the three transformation consciousnesses, it was said, "In that, the habits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions," etc. Whatever fruit is manifested by the complete maturation of the habits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions is called maturation. Whatever mind is afflicted, its self-nature is always grasping at self, therefore it is called self-grasping. Because it appears separately as objects such as form, the six consciousnesses such as the eye are those that can distinguish objects. The so-called appearing separately as objects such as form is a synonym for the aspect of objects such as form. In order to lay the foundation for the verses, it was said, "Without explaining its self-nature," etc. Because their self-nature was not extensively explained, it could not be understood. Therefore, in order to fully show what their self-nature is, it was said, "In that, the alaya-consciousness is," etc. Whatever alaya-consciousness is the seed of all, that is maturation.

has become, therefore it is called Alaya. Like this, Alaya and place, these two belong to synonyms. In order to make other explanations for this, or to say all dharmas and so on to it. All dharmas enter this consciousness as a result, therefore it is Alaya. Entering means between connection and mixing. Or that consciousness itself enters all dharmas as a cause, therefore it is Alaya. The meaning of entering is the same as before. Why is this called consciousness? The answer is, because it can make discernment, therefore it is consciousness. Like this, because it can make discernment of the object, therefore it is consciousness. Then, why is Alaya consciousness called Vipaka? The answer is, in the realms, destinies, birthplaces and all castes and so on. Like this, in the three realms, five destinies, four birthplaces and Brahmin castes, etc., from the Alaya consciousness arise the Vipaka of good and non-good, therefore it is called Vipaka. Why is this called all seeds? The answer is, the seeds of all dharmas and so on. Like this, this is the place of all dharma seeds, therefore it is all seeds. Here, in order to refute the views of the Sutra school, suppose from the transforming consciousness and so on, except for the transforming consciousness, there is no other consciousness that can be recognized. If apart from these, one wants to have another Alaya consciousness, then at that time one must also state its object, and one must also state its aspect, like this, consciousness without an object and without an aspect is not possible. The proponent says, that without an object and so on, I also do not admit that Alaya consciousness has no object and no aspect, however, it is that the object is completely unclear and the aspect is completely unclear, therefore it should not exist outside of the transforming consciousness. Consciousness cannot be...
