He asked, "Why?" The answer is: To show the reason for establishing the doctrine. It is said, "The Alaya-consciousness is." Thus and so on. Thus, the Alaya-consciousness appears as the inner close-taking, and the outer appearance is also not very clear, appearing as a container, having two aspects. The term 'consciousness' is between appearance and aspect. If one asks, 'What is the inner close-taking?' The answer is: 'In that inner close-taking,' thus and so on. Whatever habit is manifest in the nature of the completely imputed, and whatever is the body of the sense faculty with a location, and the name, this is the inner close-taking. Whatever is manifest in the natures of the completely imputed, the habit generated by that is what is spoken of. 'With a location' means the location refers to the body. 'Name' refers to the four aggregates, such as feeling. After explaining the self-nature of the object, to show the reason for its obscurity, it is said, 'Because its object is extremely subtle.' Because the two kinds of objects that were explained are extremely subtle, that Alaya-consciousness should not be a taker, nor should it be a consciousness of a location. The words in the commentary, by putting the summary of the words first, one can understand the meaning. To show the summary of the words, it is said: In what Alaya-consciousness is there a consciousness that should not be a close-taking, and a consciousness that should not be a location, that Alaya-consciousness should be a consciousness that should not be a taker and a location. The consciousness of a location is between the aspect of a location and appearing as a location. If one asks, 'What is the taker?' The answer is: 'The taker is the one who takes.' Thus and so on. Whatever inner close-taking is shown, that is what is said to be the word 'taker.' This is the concluding word. To show that, it is also said: 'The habit of discriminating about self, etc.' Whatever habit is generated by discriminating about self, etc., and the habit generated by those who discriminate about forms, etc.

Whatever can grow is called "taking." Why is habit called "taking"? Because it says, "Because it exists," and so on. Like this, because there are such habits, the Alaya consciousness can generate discriminations about "I" and so on, as well as discriminations about forms and other dharmas. Because it takes the result, it generates discriminations about "I" and so on, as well as discriminations about forms and other dharmas. Those habits are called "taking." From this arises the meaning of the word: if it exists, it can take the result as previously stated, therefore habit is called "taking." After explaining "taking," in order to explain why Alaya consciousness should not be "taking," it says, "It should not be a form of awareness, that is, 'this is this,'" and so on. Whatever is said to be "taking," Alaya consciousness should not be in the form of being able to individually perceive "this is this" with its own wisdom. Therefore, Alaya consciousness should not be "taking." In order to relate the meaning of the second "taking" to "taking," it is also said, "Or, because of close taking, it is taking." "Place" is also "taking" because of close taking. If you want to know what "place" is, it says, "Place is the body." The body itself is shown as the "place." That "place" should also be understood as the form and name of the root related to the place. Therefore, the five aggregates are shown as the "place." If you want to know how it is "place taking," it says, "Therefore, whatever is close taking is close going," and so on. The "taking" of that "place" is close going, it is one with accomplishment and happiness, therefore it is "taking." "Taking" is shown as a synonym for "close going," like this, close taking, close going, and arising belong to the same category. From this arises the meaning of the word: the five aggregates are one with accomplishment and happiness, therefore it is taking, that is, close going and arising. In order to explain that the close taking of the place in the desire realm and the form realm are different, it says, "In the desire realm and the form realm, both are taking," and so on. In the desire realm and the form realm, both name and form are accom
