How is it then, by what means does one bring the mind close to the realm of immortality? The statement that "the widespread arising of cessation, from mindfulness arises detachment," and that later one will attain liberation, this thought must be expressed. If, from mindfulness of cessation, the attainment of desire is cut off, then one has already become detached from desire, and the transformation of not being associated with it is that later one will attain liberation. If it is said in this way, then it is the same as before, and there is no difference at all. Or is it that one becomes detached from desire merely by being mindful of cessation? If that is the case, how can one become detached from desire while still possessing attainment? And how can one later attain liberation? This thought must be expressed. After speaking extensively, whether it is called "mind," or called "intellect," or called "consciousness," whatever is called "this," that is what ignorant ordinary people who have not heard the Dharma have long cleansed, hidden, and claimed as their own, and they firmly believe and grasp that "this is mine," "this is I," "this is my self," etc. This is a fragment from the Sutra Pitaka. Why cleanse and hide it? It is explained: because they claim it as their own. How do they claim it as their own? It is explained: in this way, by grasping through firm belief. The so-called "following after" refers to following after both the sense of "mine" and the way of viewing as "mine." Following after means going after. Firm belief is through views, because of firmly believing through two ways. The two ways that are shown are connected through the three widespread words "this is mine." The two widespread ways refer to the co-emergent view of self and the imputed view of self, in order. For example, the co-emergent view of self is "this is I," which even deer and birds have. The imputed view of self is "this is mine."
