Turning back from those meditative absorptions. How does one turn back? Worldly meditative absorptions do not wish to proceed indefinitely, because they go up to the peak of existence, do not go to nirvana, go to a bad destination, and also turn back again. Those who have gone to nirvana are those who have gone in that way, which means they have gone to a state where they proceed indefinitely, have gone to a good destination, and have gone to a state of no return. Thus, as explained, nirvana is shown to be unsurpassed, because having gone to nirvana, there is nothing further to go beyond nirvana. It is also shown to be good, because one has gone to a good destination. It is also shown to be permanent, because having gone from nirvana, one does not return. Monks, just as there are seeds that are undamaged, unrotten, not scorched by wind and sun, fresh, endowed with vitality, and well-preserved, and there is soil and water, then those seeds will grow, expand, and flourish. Monks, similarly, if there is karma, and there are afflictions, craving, views, pride, and ignorance, then in the next life, actions will arise. This is a passage from the sutras. Karma, with the help of afflictions, causes birth. How is this known? Because an arhat, whose afflictions are exhausted, does not arise. Karma also has power, because if afflictions are not exhausted, karma arises as it is, for example, beings are born in hells and so on due to the karma of experiencing hells. Those afflictions, such as craving, etc., refer to craving, views, pride, and ignorance, as mentioned. Views, pride, and ignorance are the leaders, meaning that craving is the leader.

It is a statement of negation. If asked, how is it negated? It means that the view of self increases, because due to the view of self, all afflictions arise for the selflessness, because it is pervasive and does not abandon it. Because craving is pervasive, and because craving is not abandoned, this is a statement of negation. The same applies to the gate of "I am" pride. Therefore, only these are mentioned, but not anger and doubt. Since craving itself is the cause of manifest accomplishment, then views, pride, and ignorance are what lead them, therefore only these are mentioned in the sutra, but not anger and doubt. "Furthermore" is the meaning of extensive explanation, another situation is that the companions of karma in the desire realm are all afflictions, just like this, karma also exists, along with afflictions, etc., this truly shows this point. The latter part of the sutra section refers to the companions of the form and formless realms as being craving, etc. The craving, views, pride, and ignorance of the form realm and the formless realm are the companions of karma, this truly shows this point. How is it known that the companions of karma in the two realms are craving, etc.? Because there are habits of meditation in which craving, views, pride, and doubt are dominant. Thus, if there is meditation in which craving is dominant, then craving will increase, until between meditations in which doubt is dominant, there is doubt. Therefore, it can be determined that their companions of karma are craving, etc. Someone says: In this sutra section, craving, views, pride, and ignorance are mentioned, since ignorance is mentioned, then why does it point out doubt when it says "because there are habits of meditation in which craving, views, pride, and doubt are dominant"? Here it is explained: doubt is completely distinguished by ignorance, therefore, mentioning ignorance here indicates doubt, it should be known that the companion doubt also exists, and because it produces karma, it will become a cause. Furthermore, whoever has the fourth dharma...

It is preached to those meditators who are more wise, but not to those meditators who are more doubtful. According to their view, there is neither debate nor any complete answer. Monks, these new monks are tormented by the harm of practice, suppressed by the mud of pure conduct, the evil and unwholesome dharmas are the source of complete affliction, accompanied by plagues, are the mature aspect of suffering, and in the next life they will experience birth, old age, and death, all of which are suppressed. This is called a fragment of the Sutra. Evil refers to evil in a broad sense, from evil and unwholesome dharmas to afflictions, etc., which are the source of complete affliction, and from rebirth to birth, old age, and death. It is said: What are these different kinds of dharmas, such as evil and unwholesome dharmas, which are the source of complete affliction? What is said here are the causes of gain and respect, what are the causes of gain and the causes of respect? What are those? They are the greedy, etc., namely the greedy, the harmful, the angry, the resentful, the concealing, the destructive, the jealous, the stingy, the deceitful, the hypocritical, the shameless, the impudent, the desirous of evil, and the heretical. The causes of gain and respect are greed, etc., it should be said like this, but the reason for saying the greedy, etc., is to quote the fragment of the Sutra, that is, from the greedy, the harmful, etc., in a broad sense, all the way to the heretical. It is said: Even so, how should these dharmas be connected from the greedy to the heretical? It should be connected extensively like this, that is, the greedy themselves, the harmful themselves, etc., all the way to the heretical themselves, the things should be stated like this. This fragment of the Sutra shows that there are three kinds of faults. Abandoning the study in this life shows that it is the first fault.
