And it is distinguished by subsequent words such as diligence, mindfulness, and samadhi. It should be understood that it is distinguished by subsequent words. How so? From "initiating diligence and without discouragement" to "the mind being equally placed and focused on one point." Monks, when properly attending to these previously unheard of dharmas, namely, "This is the noble truth of suffering," then arises the eye, knowledge, wisdom, and clarity. This is a passage from the sutra. Because the cause of the nature of definitive words is completely pure, if translated into letters, it is "wisdom." Therefore, this is the cause of the nature of definitive words. In order to correctly show that the eye has no defects, errors, and impurities, it is distinguished in three ways. That is to say, in order to correctly show that the eye of wisdom has no defects, it is distinguished by the word "knowledge." Because the physical eye sees objects in doubt, it is called "defect," because there is no definite wisdom. In order to correctly show that there is no error, it is distinguished by the word "wisdom." Because the physical eye cannot see reality as it is, it is called "error." In order to correctly show that there is no impurity, it is distinguished by the word "clarity." Because the physical eye cannot see complete purity, it is called "impure." Therefore, it is distinguished in three ways because it is inconsistent with the nature of the physical eye. Considering the truths to be negative views, doubt, and ignorance, etc., the antidote is not referring to taking truth as the object, but rather referring to not being the antidote to wrong views, doubt, and ignorance, etc. This is a synonym. In order to distinguish from this, the eye, etc., are mentioned. That is to say, in order to distinguish from the views of the outsiders, the eye, knowledge, wisdom, and clarity are mentioned. How to distinguish? Because it is said in the sutra that when properly attending, the eye, knowledge, wisdom, and clarity arise. This is because the undefiled eye of wisdom is the manifestation of things, and it is the antidote to wrong views.

Indeed. That itself is knowledge because of being without doubt, it is the antidote to doubt. That itself is wisdom because it truly accomplishes the meaning, it is the antidote to ignorance. Among the three trainings, the first to see is the eye, that is, in the path of seeing, from 'this is the noble truth of suffering' to 'this is the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering,' what is the first to see? In the path of cultivation, it is the noble truth of suffering. It should be fully known by direct cognition, that is, from the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering, it should be cultivated by direct cognition, what is the first to see? In the path of no more learning, the noble truth of suffering, I have fully known by direct cognition, that is, from the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering, they have cultivated by direct cognition, what is the first to see? This, in these three trainings, the first to see is this eye. How to discern what is seen is knowledge, that is, in these three paths, how the noble truths such as suffering are seen, the wisdom that establishes them, and the wisdom that does not discern, obtained after the supramundane, discerning the two characteristics of self and general, that is, individual attention is knowledge. That should also be known as the wisdom without outflows, because outflows do not increase in it. That should also be known in this way, in all three paths, the supramundane that does not discern arises first, and then the subsequent discernment arises after that. The distinction between the wisdom that does not discern and the wisdom that discerns, which is vast and complete, should be viewed in the Yogācāra-bhūmi. The activity that arises extensively from those two is precisely those two, the eye and knowledge. Relying on that which has so much, that is, because there are so many things, these four noble truths, therefore it has so much. That thing of it is precisely that which has so much, in that, it is relying on that which has so much, from steadfastness to focusing on that.

English

When making them, the two are wisdom. Why? Because they hold all that exists. Like this, holding all the sufferings, namely past, present, and future, and all their origins, their cessation, and their paths, therefore both are wisdom. Relying on the nature of what exists, it is wisdom. The nature of suffering and so on, as it exists, is what exists. That which has the four noble truths is what has the nature of what exists. Its entity is the nature of what exists. Relying on that nature of what exists, when focusing on it, both are wisdom. Why? Because it realizes truthfully as it is. Like this, it realizes the truths of suffering and so on truthfully as they are. Furthermore, the extensive explanation is that for those who have not heard the Dharma, if one thinks that there is no knowledge arising from hearing, and it is inferential, but it is not inferential. To refute that, the term "eye" is spoken. If it is not arising from hearing, nor is it inferential, then it is seeing arising from faith. Like when meditating on impurity, due to faith in bones and skeletons, by focusing on faith, one sees bones and skeletons filling the earth. If one thinks like that, therefore, to refute seeing arising from faith, the term "knowledge" is spoken. If it is not arising from hearing, nor is it a thinker, nor is it arising from faith, then it is one with pride. Those with pride think, "I see." If one thinks like that, therefore, to refute pride, the term "wisdom" is spoken. If they are not those, but they are with outflows, if one thinks like that, therefore, to refute that nature of being with outflows, the term "wisdom" is spoken. Why? Because of the meaning of purity. That purity is without defilement. Some say that they are the Vaibhashikas (distinction speakers). That is the extensive explanation, that patience is the nature of seeing, therefore it is the eye, this is it. In the three recitations
