As it is taught, then the mind endowed with loving-kindness is in terms of the antidote itself. It is fully shown by the three words: without anger, without hostility, without harm. The mind is in terms of the result itself, fully shown by the word "vast." The mind is in terms of both, fully shown by the word "becoming great." The mind is in terms of the object itself, fully shown by the word "immeasurable." The mind is in terms of purity itself, fully shown by the word "well cultivated." The meaning of "the place shows the one abiding" is that the directions indicate sentient beings, which is its synonym. For example, it is like calling out to the people sitting on the throne, saying, "those on the throne"; it is like saying, "the people on the mountain were burned by fire." What is shown is just the intention of mindfulness, not just mindfulness of that itself. Because of believing in everything at once, it means that all sentient beings are mentioned together. That is to show loving-kindness. It shows following at other times as well, meaning it shows not being short-lived, but following for a long time. If one knows in this way and sees in this way, one will initiate diligence and be without shrinking back. The body is extremely subdued and without wrongdoing. Mindfulness is closely established and without universal delusion. The mind is equally established and is one-pointed, which is a section of the sutra. The so-called later words have explanation, which means the later words, such as without shrinking back, etc., use these four words, initiating diligence, etc., those with explanation, that is, the later words have explanation. If you ask how it is in order, as an antidote to the mind being too shrinking, initiating diligence and being without shrinking back, this is the later words having explanation. As an antidote to being too attached, the body is extremely subdued and without wrongdoing, that is the meaning.

Even without having committed any faults, one should recognize that the body is not in danger and that the body is capable. The so-called "inward gathering" refers to being close to kindness and completely free from ignorance. The so-called "outward distraction" refers to the mind being equally abiding and focused on one point, which is explained by the subsequent words. What are the characteristics of being overly lax, etc., as described in the sutras? If asked, how is the mind overly lax? The answer is that the mind is associated with laziness. If asked, how is the mind overly agitated? The answer is that the mind is associated with excitement. If asked, how is the mind inwardly gathered? The answer is that the mind is associated with dullness and sleep, the mind is associated with inward cessation, but not with insight; in this way, the mind is inwardly gathered. If asked, how is the mind outwardly distracted? The answer is that with regard to the five desirable qualities, following after distraction and following after dissipation, in this way, the mind is outwardly distracted. This is how it is said in the sutras. The so-called "merely," extensively speaking, is that the antidotes to these four types of minds each have two types of mental activities, each having two, thus becoming eight types of abandoning mental activities. What are the eight? The sutras say in great detail: what is desire, what is effort, what is faith, what is extreme pliancy, what is mindfulness, what is awareness, what is attention, and what is equanimity. These are called the mental activities of abandonment. This is how it is said in the sutras. Among them, the antidotes to being overly lax are desire and effort, because they are the antidotes to laziness. The antidotes to being overly agitated are faith and extreme pliancy, because with faith, extreme pliancy becomes the antidote. The antidotes to inward gathering are mindfulness and awareness, because with these two, there will be no dullness or sleep, and insight will also abide. The antidotes to outward distraction are attention and equanimity. How is this done? Attention is present attention.

Therefore, regarding this very body, from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head, from the hair and brain to the skin below, contemplate separately that it is filled with various impurities. This body has hair and body hair, etc., which is extensively explained. Then, for these formations, abandon them in the manner of equanimity. Furthermore, what is extensively explained is that the state of calm abiding is when the mind is disturbed by various conceptualizations, not calmed down, and becomes agitated, then one cannot focus on the object, becomes peaceful, and naturally accomplishes, this is calm abiding. Insight is when one falls into dullness, one cultivates this by focusing on the object of extreme joy. Therefore, these words themselves are the antidotes to the antidotes of the near afflictions, namely, initiating diligence and not sinking. The body is thoroughly subdued and there is no creation of evil deeds, these are the two words. Why? Because they are successively the antidotes to dullness and agitation, and dullness and agitation are also merely the near afflictions of calm abiding and insight. Dullness means that for some reason, the assembly becomes very weak, and thus there is a certain mental factor that arises. Similarly, agitation also means that for some reason it becomes agitated. The antidotes to the near afflictions of equanimity are also two words, namely, mindfulness abides closely and there is no universal delusion. The mind abides equally and is one-pointed, these are. Equanimity is also, if the mind is neither dull nor agitated, but is in a state of equality, then one treats it with equanimity, this is equanimity. The four words are, the latter words are the explanation of these words. For what reason does the body create evil deeds? This is extensively explained. Therefore, because if one does not initiate diligence, the mind will fall into dullness, until the mind declines, therefore in order to truly show its antidote, namely, in order to truly show the antidotes to mental dullness, physical fatigue, forgetfulness, and mental decline, it is diligence and so on, namely, diligence and
