So, where does this term come from? It is to universally understand that the correct and excellent Dharma is taught. To arrange that meaning into verses, it is said here: "For the sake of being free from the impurities of disagreement." This phrase appears extensively, meaning that for the sake of being free from the impurities of the opposing side, it should be understood as being completely purified by two words. That is, by the two words "completely pure" and "completely cleansed." Because there are no afflictions, these two words should be understood as being without afflictions. That is, by the two words "without afflictions" and "free from near afflictions." In order to arise without obscurations, these two words should be understood as being upright. That is, by the two words "become upright" and "capable." In order to be without wavering, these two words should be understood as being abiding. That is, by the two words "abiding" and "attaining non-wavering." Thus, that samadhi is indeed virtuous, and as previously extensively taught, similarly summarized by verses, it is by two and two words that the meaning of samadhi is extensively explained. By two words, the virtue of samadhi with its characteristics is greatly explained, that is, by the two words "completely pure" and "completely cleansed." By two words, the virtue of samadhi, that is, such a characteristic, is greatly explained, that is, by the two words "without afflictions" and "free from near afflictions." By two words, the controllability of samadhi with its characteristics is greatly shown, that is, by the two words "become upright" and "capable." By two words, the accomplishment of samadhi with its characteristics is greatly explained, that is, by the words "abiding" and "attaining non-wavering." The so-called completely pure is because there are no afflictions and freedom from near afflictions, that is, because there are no afflictions and freedom from near afflictions. In order to be free from the flow of desires associated with gain, respect, and verses, it is because of possessing gain, possessing respect, and possessing verses.

Desire is the cause and the master. Because it is free from the arising of desires, it is completely purified by the absence of afflictions. Venerable one, that which is called "joyful affliction" is a euphemism for the various transmigrations of sinful desires, as it comes from the sutras. Because it is free from the near afflictions of craving, views, pride, and doubt, it is completely purified by being free from near afflictions. As it has been shown, so is the order. Why is it said that only the absence of afflictions and near afflictions such as craving is completely pure? Although it is not only these, but because some meditators are strongly craving, some meditators are strongly viewing, and some meditators are strongly doubting, therefore, because they are free from these near afflictions, their minds are completely pure, as it is said. To be completely accomplished is only through uprightness and so on. Only through uprightness, only through suitability, only through abiding, only through obtaining immovability, is it completely purified. Because it is extremely subdued. How is it extremely subdued? Because it arises without effort. That which is called being free from all movement is a synonym for being free from the eight faults. Those eight faults are the two of investigation and analysis, the two of exhalation and inhalation, and the four of pleasure and so on. Here, that meaning is stated, called "completely pure by the two," which refers to the absence of afflictions and the absence of near afflictions. The other words refer to uprightness and so on. By the six meanings in order, one should know the absence of afflictions and so on. How is it done? Because of being free from the desire for gain and so on, and from craving and so on. Because of being free from the desire for gain and so on, one should know that there is no affliction. Because of being free from craving and so on, one should know that there is freedom from near afflictions. Because it is extremely subdued, one should know that it is upright. Because of the suitability of supernormal powers and qualities, it is suitable.
