Because everything that has not been obtained from oneself completely deteriorates, it causes complete deterioration. Furthermore, to put it briefly, what is said to appear extensively is, again, to put it briefly, this verse broadly reveals the very joy of fully understanding desires with one word, namely through the phrase "difficult to understand." The difficulty of abandoning itself is fully revealed with three phrases: "difficult to resist, difficult to conquer, having wandering nature, difficult to comprehend." Not fully understanding and abandoning, and how it harms whom, is fully revealed with three phrases, namely the phrase "destroys the path of goodness," which temporarily fully reveals how to do it. And the two phrases "is the enemy of faith and wisdom" and "destroys discipline" also fully reveal that it causes much harm. The remaining verses fully reveal to whom it harms. Because of what? Because of the extensively appearing phrase "those with desire and self-willed autonomy." It is steadfast, how is it steadfast? Even if deceived, it does not turn back. It is a distant and dense wandering. How does it wander densely? In invisible and difficult to enter places, it is shown through the difficulty of understanding itself, namely through the phrase "difficult to understand." Like that, it should be combined from the aspect of living beings. The lack of compassion itself is through destroying the path of goodness, etc. Discipline, etc., those that first have destroying the path of goodness, those are destroying the path of goodness, etc. Its entity is destroying the path of goodness, etc. itself, namely through destroying the path of goodness, etc. itself. The words "is the enemy of faith and wisdom" and "is the destroyer of discipline" are because they cause all the roots of goodness to completely disappear. If asked what is shown through three examples, it is through fire without oil, trees, and water. This refers to name and form controlled by life, appearing extensively, where name refers to the four non-form aggregates, because it tends towards this. Form refers to the four great elements and what is caused by the four great elements, becoming form.

Because it is appropriate. Life is the dharma that serves as the basis for both name and form and consciousness, and it is a synonym for what is called life. To arise by its power means that without that life, name and form will not arise. What are those three similes like? "Unstable" refers to life, name, and form. By what means are they unstable through those three similes? It means that they are of the nature of destruction, from the aspects of death, collapse, and exhaustion. That instability itself is shown by the butter lamp, the tree, and the water that are inclined towards death, inclined towards collapse, and inclined towards exhaustion. The butter lamp shows that name is inclined towards death, just as a butter lamp is moved by the wind during the day. The tree shows that form is inclined towards collapse, just as the roots of a tree by a river shake. The water shows that life is inclined towards exhaustion, just as water in a cracked container leaks out. By eight reasons, one should not be too diligent in this dharma, and what is widely proclaimed are those things that do not accord with the dharma. "Without effort or ability," from the widely occurring "that is certainly obscured by sinful deeds and shows much suffering" that is proclaimed. Furthermore, what causes discouragement is, "believing upon hearing of the lower realms," which is widely occurring. Hearing of the lower realms refers to those who proclaim the dharma. Believing means that there are lower realms. Thinking that one will be born there by unwholesome actions. Not applying the antidote to it. Not applying the antidote to it means not doing what hinders wholesome actions from being born in the lower realms, and what causes one to attain the happy realms. Fear refers to the fear of the lower realms. Having ability refers to engaging in wholesome actions. Short life means that if one lives as expected, one will live to be a hundred years old. That is also uncertain, meaning that life is also uncertain. Sometimes one dies in the womb itself. Sometimes in childhood. Sometimes in adulthood. What should not be done means that it should not be done. It is not right to do wholesome actions as unwholesome actions, that is the meaning. There is no other agent. There is no other agent for it. Without doing, there is no happiness. Without doing wholesome actions, there is no suffering.
