Returns to. Abandoning the mixing of women, men, boys, and girls. Returns from not mixing women, men, boys, and girls. Abandoning the taking of gold and silver, returns from not taking gold and silver. Abandoning the taking of raw rice, returns from not taking raw rice. Being a solitary eater, abandoning the night, he strives to engage in timely conduct. Abandoning eating at improper times, he returns from eating at improper times. He is content and satisfied with robes that cover the body. He is content and satisfied with food that merely fills the stomach. Wherever he goes, he goes with his alms bowl and robes. For example, just as birds fly wherever they go with their wings and feathers. Similarly, he is content and satisfied with robes that cover the body, he is content and satisfied with food that merely fills the stomach, and wherever he goes, he goes with his alms bowl and robes. He dwells guarding the doors of his senses, endowed with this noble aggregate of moral discipline. When he sees forms with his eyes, he does not grasp at their signs or details. Because he dwells restrained by the restraint of the eye faculty, he guards the eye faculty for the sake of restraining the evil, unwholesome qualities of covetousness and displeasure that would flow into his mind from the basis of whatever he might see. Just as he restrains the eye faculty, so too he restrains the faculties from the ear to the mind. Endowed with this noble aggregate of moral discipline and guarding the doors of his senses, he dwells with mindfulness and awareness in going and returning. In going, standing, sitting, lying down, not lying down, speaking, not speaking, sleeping, and dispelling weariness, he dwells with mindfulness and awareness. He is endowed with this noble aggregate of moral discipline, guarding the doors of his senses, and endowed with mindfulness and awareness, therefore he dwells in secluded places, forests, mountains, and remote dwellings. Even if he goes to a secluded place or goes to the foot of a tree, he sits cross-legged, straightening his body.

Again, he dwells with mindfulness established in front. He, having abandoned covetousness for the world, dwells frequently with a mind free from covetousness, and completely subdues his mind to covetousness. Having abandoned malice, drowsiness, sleep, excitement, regret, and doubt for the world, having transcended hesitation, and having transcended doubt, in virtuous dharmas, he has no double mind, and completely engages his mind in freedom from doubt. Having abandoned the five obscurations, which cause the mind to be afflicted, cause it to be weakened by poverty, correspond to the category of poverty, and turn into non-peace, being secluded from desire, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing investigation, possessing analysis, possessing joy and happiness born of seclusion, he dwells having perfected the first dhyana. He, being free from investigation and analysis, being completely pure within, the continuum of his mind having become one, without investigation, without analysis, possessing joy and happiness born of samadhi, he dwells having perfected the second dhyana. He, being free from attachment to joy, dwells in equanimity, and is mindful and possesses clear comprehension, experiencing happiness with his body, the noble ones declare him to be mindful, the one who dwells in happiness is equanimous, he dwells having perfected the third dhyana free from joy. He also abandons happiness, having previously abandoned suffering, and pleasure and displeasure also cease, neither happiness nor suffering, equanimity and mindfulness being completely pure, he dwells having perfected the fourth dhyana. He thus establishes his mind in equanimity, completely pure, completely subdued and without afflictions, free from near afflictions, upright, capable and dwells, having attained immovability, and in order to know the exhaustion of defilements, he directs his mind to manifest wisdom, he thus truly knows as it is that this is the noble truth of suffering. This is the origin of suffering. This is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering, he truly knows as it is. When he knows thus and sees thus, in desire
