From... This, called "the mind that has become a single continuum," enables one to grasp correctly until the obscuration of doubt is completely eliminated. Through four words, namely: the mind of virtue, the mind of discrimination, the mind of reverence, and the mind of devotion. What are the four types of people who are like dogs, as taught by the Blessed One? Which four? After extensively discussing the four types of dogs, similarly, in the Dharma and Discipline of the Noble Ones, there are also these four types of people who are like hunting dogs. Which four? A person like a hunting dog that defecates at the wrong time, a person like a hunting dog that looks at the bell, a person like a hunting dog that circles around, and a person like a hunting dog that holds on tightly. What is a person like a hunting dog that defecates at the wrong time? Monks, here, someone sits before a monk in order to listen to the Dharma, and the monk teaches him the Dharma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, completely purified, and correctly and thoroughly explains the Brahmacarya. At that time, he thinks about thoughts of desire, thoughts of malice, and thoughts of harming, so he does not attain the purpose for which he sits before the monk. For example, a hunting dog that defecates at the wrong time, when the hunter releases it to chase a pig or a deer, it then defecates or urinates. I say that person is like that. This is called a person like a hunting dog that defecates at the wrong time. What is a person like a hunting dog that looks at the bell? Monks, here, someone sits before a monk in order to listen to the Dharma, and when the monk teaches him the Dharma that is good in the beginning, he then looks at the face of the Dharma speaker and the bell, so he does not attain the purpose for which he sits before the monk.

Looking ahead and looking at the hunting dog, just as a hunter releases a hunting dog to chase a pig or deer, but gains nothing, I say the same to that person. This is called a person who looks like he is looking at a hunting dog. What is a person who is like a wandering hunting dog? Monks, here someone sits in front of a monk to listen to the Dharma, and the monk teaches him the Dharma starting from the initial goodness, but he does not firmly remember that Dharma, does not firmly remember it, does not skillfully comprehend it, and even if he remembers it, he forgets it. Therefore, he does not obtain the meaning of sitting in front of the monk to listen to the Dharma. For example, a hunting dog wanders, when a hunter releases a hunting dog to chase a pig or deer, it wanders near the pig or deer, does not firmly remember it, does not firmly remember it, does not skillfully comprehend it, and even if it remembers it, it lets it go.
