And, feeling, recognition, formation, and consciousness, are the nature of many things. Views and so on are also merely the function of the five aggregates, and apart from the aggregates, there is no such thing as a single "I." If this is understood, one will be liberated from clinging to a single "I." If one is liberated from clinging to a single "I," then the clinging to self that arises from the cause of clinging to a single "I" will also be liberated. Therefore, to counteract clinging to a single "I," the five aggregates are taught. Clinging to "eating" is also like this; those who claim there is an "I" believe that the happiness arising from virtuous actions, and the suffering arising from non-virtuous actions, are experienced by that "I," and that the "I" enjoys the fruits of karma, and that objects such as form and sound are also experienced by that "I," and they believe that the "I" enjoys objects. Therefore, to counteract clinging to the "I" as an enjoyer, the twelve sources are taught. That is to say, the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, happiness or suffering, and objects such as form and sound, are what are enjoyed, and this is to take the fruits of karma and objects as the target. And taking the fruits of karma as the target is also to experience and enjoy the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions by the one who performed the actions. Virtuous and non-virtuous actions are also created by consciousness through the twelve sources, therefore, from eye consciousness to mind consciousness, all experience and take as their target, happiness and suffering are only like this, there is no "I" that enjoys the fruits of karma. And taking objects such as form as the target and enjoying them is also done by the twelve sources themselves. Just like this, form is experienced and taken as the target by the eye source, and even dharma is experienced and taken as the target by the mind source, apart from that, there is no "I" that experiences and enjoys the fruits of karma and objects. Therefore, experiencing and enjoying the fruits of karma and objects such as form is the function of the eye and other twelve sources, apart from that, there is no such thing as an "I" that enjoys the fruits and objects. If this is understood, one will be liberated from clinging to "eating." Therefore, to counteract clinging to "eating,"

Dangerously, the twelve sources are explained. Those who cling to the agent, those who claim "I," both good and bad are done by that "I," and actions such as offerings and going are also done by "I." That "I" is considered to exist separately from the aggregates. Therefore, to counteract clinging to that "I" as the agent, the eighteen elements are explained. The good and bad that arise from there are entirely done by the elements such as the eye, and apart from that, there is no "I" as the agent. The elements themselves are not the nature of the agent. Therefore, because there is no agent and they maintain their own characteristics, they are called "elements." Thus, although there is no "I" as the agent, and the elements themselves are not the agent, cause and effect arise mutually, and only when there is a cause can an effect arise. The arising of the effect also depends solely on the existence of the cause, and apart from the nature of the effect and the cause, there is no other "I" that exists as the agent. Therefore, actions are entirely done by the eighteen elements, and apart from that, there is no other "I" that exists as the agent. If the mind is narrow, it will turn from clinging to the agent to a wrong view. Therefore, to counteract clinging to the agent, the eighteen elements are explained. Having thus explained the nature of the aggregates, elements, and sources, now, in order to benefit the disciples by thoroughly distinguishing the characteristics of the Dharma, starting from the eighteen elements themselves, for the Dharmas explained in the context of the aggregates, sources, and elements, one should begin to distinguish and contemplate what is form, what is formless, what is visible, what is invisible, and so on. Such distinction and contemplation is to distinguish the nature of the eighteen elements as having form, being formless, etc., and not to begin the distinction from the Dharmas of the five aggregates and the twelve sources. Why is that? Because, in the case of explaining the five aggregates, when asked what the five aggregates are, the answer is: the aggregate of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Although feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are explained as being divided into four types of mind, for the aggregate of form in general,
