The five faculties such as and the aspects of form, smell, taste, and touch that do not abide as non-different are also not completely grasped, which is called not completely grasped. Hair, body hair, nails, teeth, saliva, urine, mucus, phlegm, blood, etc., other than the root, are called not completely grasped. What is meant by 'how many similarities'? Answer: When consciousness and faculty operate together, the faculty becomes the cause of generating consciousness, which is called similarity. Because it is the time of explaining the eighteen realms, it means how many similar realms are there among the eighteen realms? The five internal forms, that is, the five internal form realms, are called similarities. Among them, the internal realm is divided into twelve, that is, from the eye realm to the mind realm there are six, and from the eye consciousness realm to the mind consciousness realm there are six. It is not known which of the five internal ones refers to, so in order to clarify, the word 'form' is specifically mentioned. Thus, the internal faculties are the five realms of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and these five are called similarities. It is not known with what dharma it is similar, and what is the meaning of similarity, so in order to clarify, it is specifically mentioned that 'because each of its own consciousnesses is in accordance with the object'. The self-consciousness of the eye realm is eye consciousness, the object of the eye faculty is form, and the object of consciousness is also form. The eye faculty and eye consciousness are the same on form, so it is called similarity. Also, just as the object of eye consciousness is form, the object of the faculty is also similar to form. Just as form is the cause of generating eye consciousness, the eye faculty is also the cause of generating eye consciousness. Both form and eye faculty abide in accordance with the arising of eye consciousness, so it is called similarity. In short, when the faculties such as the eye accompany and unite with eye consciousness, it is called similarity. What is similar to it? Answer: Consciousness and non-

Those possessing faculties are called 'similar to that.' Among the eighteen elements, how many elements are similar to that? This is the meaning of the question. To explain what 'similar to that' is like, it is stated that 'it itself is empty of consciousness,' meaning that the eyes and other faculties, when they are empty, that is, when the consciousnesses of the eyes and so on are empty, these faculties do not act as the cause of producing their own consciousness, and when only the faculties exist during fainting and sleeping, this is called 'similar to that.' Why are those faculties that are empty of their own consciousness called 'similar to that'? Therefore, it is stated that 'because they are of the same kind as themselves,' meaning that the eyes and other faculties that are empty of their own consciousness, these eyes and other faculties that are empty of their own consciousness, because they are of the same kind, are called 'similar to that.' Or, the eyes and other faculties that are empty of their own consciousness, and the eyes and other faculties that possess their own consciousness, both are of the same kind as eye faculties, so they are called 'similar to that,' that is, when the eye of Deva produces eye consciousness, and when the eye faculty of Deva does not produce eye consciousness, both eyes are of the same kind as eye faculties, so they are called 'similar to that.' Both the eye faculty that is empty of its own eye consciousness and that which is similar to it, act as the common and uncommon cause of producing eye consciousness, so they are called 'similar' and 'same,' but objects such as form and sound are not called 'similar' and 'similar to that,' why? When form acts as the cause of producing the eye consciousness of Deva, it is called 'similar,' but at the same time, it also acts as the cause of the eye consciousness of Dāna, so it becomes both 'similar' and 'similar to that.' Because it becomes both 'similar' and 'similar to that' at the same time, it cannot be established as 'similar' or 'similar to that.' Form and so on, just as they produce the eye consciousness of Deva, also produce the eye consciousness of Dāna, so they are common, therefore they are not called 'similar to that.'
