Explanation of the Five Aggregates. The Root of Earth. Explanation of the Five Aggregates. The Root of Earth. In Sanskrit: Panca Skandha Bhasyam. In Tibetan: Explanation of the Five Aggregates. Homage to youthful Manjushri. In order to explain this treatise, it is necessary to first explain four meanings. The four meanings are: stating the offering ritual, connection, necessity, and the necessity of necessity. Among these, stating the offering ritual is to praise and state the virtues of the deity in whom one has faith. This is done in order to conform to the tradition of the noble ones, and in order for the composed treatise to be completed without being disturbed by obstacles. Therefore, it is not permissible not to state it first. Furthermore, this treatise is like a gateway to entering the Abhidharma Pitaka, and belongs to its branch. The praise ritual has already been mentioned at the beginning of the Abhidharma Pitaka, and because it is included there, it is not discussed separately. The connection is that the Blessed One, for the benefit of sentient beings, spoke of a hundred thousand sections of Abhidharma. Because the texts are numerous, it is not possible for everyone to comprehend them all. If one can comprehend this short treatise, one will become proficient in the nature of the hundred thousand Abhidharma teachings. In this way, the Abhidharma Pitaka and this treatise are connected. The necessity is that this treatise is composed in order to become proficient in the nature of all phenomena, and becoming proficient in the nature of phenomena itself is the necessity. Among these, there are two types of phenomena: the five aggregates without outflows and the five aggregates with outflows. Among these, the five aggregates with outflows are the five aggregates from the form aggregate to the consciousness aggregate. The five aggregates without outflows are the aggregate of ethics, the aggregate of concentration, the aggregate of wisdom, the aggregate of liberation, and the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation. The nature of phenomena also has two aspects: self-characteristic and general characteristic. Among these, the self-characteristic is, for example: The self-characteristic of earth is hardness, the self-characteristic of water is moisture, the self-characteristic of fire is warmth, and the self-characteristic of wind is movement. The general characteristics are impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness.
