If one hears this treatise, one will become proficient in the self and common characteristics of those dharmas. If it is thought that one has already studied and become proficient in the self and common characteristics of dharmas from the Abhidharmakośa and the Yogācārabhūmi, then writing this treatise is meaningless. The answer is that there are two types of students: those who understand through elaboration and those who understand through brevity. Among them, those who understand through elaboration will understand the meaning if the treatise is explained in detail. For those people, the Abhidharmakośa and so on are also necessary. Those who understand through brevity will understand many meanings if only a brief indication is given. Therefore, writing this treatise is not meaningless. Alternatively, some householders wish to be proficient in the nature of dharma, but are unable to listen to many treatises due to temporary affairs such as fields and trade. Some ordained yogis, if they listen to many treatises, also fear that it will become an obstacle to yoga, and also wish to be proficient in the nature of dharma. For those people, writing this treatise is not meaningless. If one is proficient in the nature of dharma, what is the need? If one is not proficient in the nature of dharma, there is no way to abandon afflictions. If one does not abandon afflictions, one cannot escape from the prison of samsara. If one cannot escape from samsara, one cannot attain the state of nirvana. Therefore, if one is proficient in the nature of dharma, one will be able to abandon afflictions. If one abandons afflictions, one will be liberated from the prison of samsara. If one is liberated from the prison of samsara, one will attain the state of nirvana, which is the most fundamental necessity. Alternatively, this treatise shows four meanings from beginning to end: number, name, detailed classification, and characteristic. Among them, the term "five aggregates" shows number. The aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of mental formations, and the aggregate of consciousness show name. From "What is form?" up to "the fire element and the wind element" shows detailed classification. What is the earth element? "Hardness" and so on show characteristic. The aggregates of feeling and so on should also be explained accordingly. The five aggregates are

Someone asked: Since six aggregates, etc., were not spoken of in abundance, nor were four spoken of in paucity, why were only five spoken of with certainty? The answer is: In order to show "I" and "my things," therefore, neither too many nor too few were spoken of, but only these five aggregates. Among them, the four aggregates of form, feeling, perception, and formation are the necessary things of "mine," because most sentient beings are attached to them, thinking, "This is mine." The aggregate of consciousness is the thing called "I," because sentient beings grasp it as "I." Alternatively, in order to show the container, food, seasoning, agent, and profound thing, only the five aggregates were spoken of, and not six or four, etc. Among them, that which is like a container is the aggregate of form, just as food depends on a container, so too the aggregates of feeling, perception, etc., depend on the aggregate of form. That which is like food is the aggregate of feeling, just as food is to be eaten, so too the happiness and suffering of feeling are things to be experienced. That which is like seasoning is the aggregate of perception, just as food mixed with seasoning, etc., becomes more delicious, so too, if there is a reversed perception that grasps impurity as purity and suffering as happiness, one becomes more attached to the aggregate of feeling. That which is like an agent is the aggregate of formation, because the aggregate of formation brings about virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and their results of happiness and suffering. That which is like an eater is the aggregate of consciousness, because ultimately it is consciousness that experiences the happiness and suffering that are the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. Then, why is the aggregate of form spoken of first, then feeling, then perception, then formation, then consciousness, in this order? The answer is: Just as they are arranged in order of increasing grossness, the aggregate of form is obstructive, and from eye consciousness to body consciousness, all are consciousness.
