Everything below mātṛ (Sanskrit: मातृ, Romanization: mātṛ, literal meaning: mother) will be destroyed. Why, then, are only the four great elements discussed, and not five, three, or others? It is said that only these four—the basis of the seed, the moistening of the seed, the ripening of the seed, and the growth—accomplish this. There is no need to speak of five, and it is impossible to speak of three, like the four legs of a chair, so only four are spoken of. Among these, the basis of the seed is the function of the earth element. The moistening of the seed is the function of the water element. The ripening of the seed is the function of the fire element. The growth of the seed is the function of the wind element. Even the space element in a kalpa opens up opportunities for the seed to grow, so why isn't space considered the fifth great element? It is said that opening up opportunities is the function of form, but space has no form, so it has no function of opening up opportunities. The four great elements are subject to arising and ceasing, but space has no arising and ceasing, so it cannot be called a "great element." The so-called form produced by the four great elements means that it is born from the cause of the four great elements, or that the form seen from these four great elements is called produced by the four great elements. These are the eleven faculties, such as the eye faculty, which will be explained below. Therefore, the four great elements act as the cause of the form transformed from the four great elements in five ways: the five causes are the generating cause, the supporting cause, the abiding cause, the relying cause, and the increasing cause. If, like a sprout cannot grow without a seed, the form produced by the elements cannot arise without the four great elements, so it is the generating cause. The form produced by the elements cannot exist independently without relying on the four great elements, so it is the supporting cause. Just as there is no shadow when a tree is cut down, if the four great elements deteriorate or are damaged, the forms produced by them will also deteriorate, so it is the abiding cause. The four great elements are like an old man walking with a cane, arising momentarily, and the momentary continuum of the forms produced by them also arises continuously.

Therefore, it becomes the cause of reliance. When the four great elements grow and mature, the form created by them also grows, thus becoming the cause of growth. Merely showing the four great elements, in order to clearly distinguish them, it is asked: What are the four great elements? Then it is answered: They are the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element. In order to show the characteristics of the four great elements, it is said, "What is the earth element? It is solidity," and so on. Among them, "What is the earth element?" is synonymous with asking, "What is the characteristic of the earth element?" Whatever is solid, hard, and heavy is the characteristic of the earth element. What is the water element? This is asking what the characteristic of the water element is. The so-called wetness, whatever is wet, oily, and moist, is the characteristic of the water element. What is the fire element? This is asking what the characteristic of the fire element is. The so-called heat, whatever is hot, warm, and able to burn, is the characteristic of the fire element. What is the wind element? This is asking what the characteristic of the wind element is. Lightness and movement are the characteristics of the wind element; lightness causes movement, and movement causes the flow of things to go elsewhere and arise. As mentioned above, each of the three elements—earth, water, and fire—shows one characteristic, while the wind element has two characteristics: lightness and movement. Why are two characteristics mentioned? The answer is: If only lightness is mentioned and not movement, then the created form body becomes an object, and there are also created forms such as softness, roughness, heaviness, and lightness. There would be the fault of mistaking it for the wind element. If only movement is mentioned and not lightness, then when explaining mental factors, what is mind? Whatever is mental movement, the mind that arises in this way, there would be the fault of mistaking it for the wind element. Therefore, whatever has both the qualities of lightness and movement, that is the characteristic of the wind element. After explaining the characteristics of the four great elements, their function will be shown. In this regard, the function is stability.
