and growth. The function of the earth element is to stabilize. The function of the water element is to gather. The function of the fire element is to ripen. The function of the wind element is to increase. So, what is the meaning of element? The meaning of element is the meaning of holding, because it holds the eleven forms that are the cause, so it is called the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the wind element. Or, because it holds its own characteristics and common characteristics, it is called element. Earth holds the characteristic of hardness, and water holds the characteristic of moisture, and so on, as well as impermanence and suffering, and emptiness and selflessness, which are the common characteristics. Or, wherever there is one of the four great elements, then within one there are also all four. For example, wherever there is earth, there is also water, fire, and wind. Wherever there is water, there is also earth, fire, and wind, and whichever is more powerful and dominant is directly named earth, while water, fire, and wind, which are less numerous and less powerful, are called elements. For example, when a handful of flour and a handful of salt are mixed together, because the salt is more powerful and dominant, the salt is salty and is directly named, but the flour is not without the nature of an element in it, but it is there. If one great element exists, then how does it appear that all exist? The answer is that it also appears in the sutras of the Blessed One, and it also appears when analyzed with reason. What appears from the sutras is that in the Womb Entry Sutra, O Joyful One, when the impure semen and blood of the father and mother combine to form the body, the earth, water, fire, and wind each perform and exist in the functions of solidifying, gathering, ripening, and increasing. If, O Joyful One, there is the earth element there but not the water element, it will become dry or scattered like flour or ash dregs, but because the water gathers, it will not scatter or perish. If water exists but earth does not, it will drip and flow like sesame oil or mustard oil. If earth and water exist but fire does not, it will rot like rotten meat. If earth, water, and fire exist but wind does not, then it can only remain as it is, and will not increase and expand, so it is said. It also appears when analyzed with reason that wherever one exists, all exist, such as stones and trees.

Since I and other things stick together and are not separated, it is evident that the earth element has the water element. Since stones and trees, etc., shake and move, there is the wind element. Since sparks arise from two stones colliding with each other, there is the fire element. In the water element, boats and leaves, etc., are held and supported, so it is evident that the water element also has the earth element. In the water, fallen leaves and grass rot, and warm water can also be felt, so it is evident that there is fire in the water. It flows downwards and shakes, so it is evident that there is wind. In the wind element, leaves and grass are held and lifted, so it is evident that there is the earth element. Warm winds can also be felt, and if wet substances are exposed to the wind, they dry out, so it is evident that there is the fire element. Dust and wind gather together, change, and arise, so it is also evident that there is the water element. In the fire element, flames hold each other, and flames lift and hold leaves and grass, etc., so it is also evident that there is the earth element. The flames also do not separate but burn together, so it is evident that there is the water element. It moves and shakes, so it is also evident that there is the wind element. After explaining the four great elements, in order to distinguish how many kinds of form are caused, what their names are, and to show their characteristics, the question is asked, "What is the form that is caused?" Its meaning is, how many kinds of form are caused? What are the names? What are the characteristics from form to touch? This is the summary of the question. In order to show these, "eye faculty" and so on are mentioned. The number of forms that are caused is five faculties from the eye faculty to the body faculty, and five objects from form to one touch, plus the non-discriminating, there are eleven in total. Their names are: eye faculty, ear faculty, nose faculty, tongue faculty, body faculty, form, sound, smell, taste, one touch, and non-discriminating, these are all spoken by name. In order to show their characteristics.
