Furthermore, the afflicted mind is not of the nature of virtue. If the afflicted mind were of the nature of non-virtue, then those who perform virtuous deeds would not have the afflicted mind because of performing non-virtue, and therefore it would not be possible to generate the self-consciousness of "I perform virtue." Since those who perform virtuous deeds also have the self-grasping of "I perform virtue," the afflicted mind is also not of the nature of non-virtue. Alternatively, the afflicted mind is of the same class as affliction, and not of the nature of virtue, non-virtue, or obscured-unspecified. Why is it of the same class as affliction? Because it is constantly associated with the four afflictions, such as ignorance of self-grasping, therefore it is of the same class as affliction. Question: If that is the case, is the afflicted mind permanent or impermanent? Answer: It is stated, "Constantly arises," meaning that it arises continuously with a momentary stream, therefore it is called constantly arising, which indicates that it is impermanent. After explaining the arising, it then explains its cessation. If the momentary stream of affliction arises continuously, then at what time will the afflicted mind cease to exist? Therefore, it is stated, "Except for the time of the Arhat, the Noble Path, and the Cessation Attainment." The Arhat has completely abandoned all the afflicted dharmas of the three realms, so he has also abandoned the afflicted mind, therefore there is no afflicted mind in the state of the Arhat. The Noble Path is the cultivation of selflessness of person and selflessness of phenomena. This authentic cultivation is contradictory to the view of self, and is the antidote to the view of self, so there is no afflicted mind when entering the Noble Path. However, after arising from the Noble Path, the afflicted mind will arise again. Why is that? Because the Noble Learners enter the Path, and the Learners have not completely abandoned all afflictions, so the habitual imprints of the afflicted mind still exist, and the habitual imprints have not yet been purified, so after arising from the Path, it will also arise from the Alaya consciousness. In the state of the Non-Perception Attainment, there is an afflicted mind, so it is not quiescence, but cessation.

During the time of meditative absorption, there is no afflicted mind, hence it is called peaceful. Because the cessation absorption is the most peaceful, there is no afflicted mind during the time of cessation absorption. Apart from these three times, the afflicted mind is always present during times of virtue, non-virtue, and neutral states, as well as during the absorption of non-perception, the state of non-perception, mindless sleep, fainting, and so on. In short, in the context of the afflicted mind, four meanings are taught: the precise meaning of the term 'mind,' the object of focus, association, and the duration of its existence. Among these, the phrase 'thinking of self and what belongs to self' indicates the precise meaning of the term 'mind.' The phrase 'focusing on the alaya consciousness' indicates the object of focus. The phrase 'associated with the four mental afflictions and the five ever-present mental factors' indicates association. The phrase 'existing at other times except for the three times of an arhat, etc.' indicates the duration of its existence. The teaching on the afflicted mind is complete. Furthermore, in applying the term 'aggregate' to form and so on, the meaning of the term 'aggregate' is also taught. As mentioned earlier, 'form and so on are the meanings of the aggregates that are gradually explained, which are taught later,' to teach this meaning, the question is asked, 'Why is it called an aggregate?' This means asking, 'Why is the term 'aggregate' applied to form and other phenomena?' The answer is given, 'Because of accumulation,' meaning that whatever is slightly counted as form, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, large or small, inferior or superior, near or far, all these things, although they cannot be compared as concrete objects, are summarized in words, and many phenomena are gathered into one and accumulated, hence it is called the aggregate of form. Similarly, whatever is slightly counted as the nature of consciousness, from past, future, etc., to near and far, all these things, although they cannot be compared as concrete objects, are summarized in words and accumulated, hence it is called the aggregate of consciousness. To teach this very meaning, the sutra of form and so on, which differ in time, lineage, form, realm, and place, is spoken.
