The earth element. Among the three, namely, ignorance of self, view of self, and pride of self, clinging to and being attached to that self is called clinging to self. The defiled mind is the meaning of being associated with the four defilements arising from the mind. The word "etc." shows that not only do those four mind-born elements arise, but also that they are associated with the five omnipresent ones, namely, attention and mindfulness, etc. Therefore, the defiled mind is associated with nine mind-born elements, namely, the four defilements arising from the mind plus the five omnipresent ones. The existence of the defiled mind is not known to the Sravaka Abhidharmikas. Therefore, in order to show that they also have a defiled mind, and to show that the defiled mind is the nature of the mind and not the nature of mind-born elements, the word "consciousness" is mentioned. The defiled mind is the nature of consciousness, so it is the nature of the mind and not the nature of mind-born elements. If the defiled mind is the nature of the mind, then among the four dharmas, namely, virtuous, non-virtuous, unobscured-unspecified, and obscured-unspecified, which one is its nature? For this reason, the word "of the same kind" is mentioned. Among the four dharmas, the defiled mind is the nature of obscured-unspecified, not the nature of virtuous, nor the nature of non-virtuous, nor the nature of unobscured-unspecified, so it is called of the same kind. The defiled mind is associated with the four mind-born defilements such as ignorance of self, so it is called obscured. It is not the nature of virtuous, nor the nature of non-virtuous, so it is called unspecified. Why is it not the nature of virtuous and non-virtuous? If the defiled mind were the nature of virtuous, then those who do non-virtue would have no virtue, and those who do non-virtue would think, "I am doing non-virtue," and the defiled mind that clings to self would disappear. Those who do non-virtue would also think, "I am doing non-virtue," and there would be a nature of clinging.
