Because consciousness arises and ceases, and the initial eye consciousness arises, it is not always taking a body. Furthermore, during times of unconscious sleep and fainting, the entering consciousnesses completely cease, and at that time, the body is not taken, so it is not always taking a body. Therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna takes the body characterized by name and form when connecting itself in the mother's womb, and it takes and holds the body until death, so it is called the taking consciousness. The explanation of the ālaya-vijñāna is complete. Now, we begin to explain the afflicted mind (kliṣṭa-manas), and therefore we will explain it. If there is an afflicted mind other than the six entering consciousnesses, it is impossible for a consciousness without an object of focus to exist. Therefore, it is necessary to explain what the afflicted mind focuses on. Just as the term "mind" above refers to the ālaya-vijñāna and not the entering consciousnesses, similarly, the term "manas" here refers specifically to the afflicted mind and not the preceding six consciousnesses. To clarify this, the term "manas" is specifically mentioned. In reality, "manas" refers to the afflicted mind, and not directly to the preceding six consciousnesses. What does the afflicted mind focus on? Therefore, it is said that it focuses on the ālaya-vijñāna. The afflicted mind always focuses on the ālaya-vijñāna, so its object is the ālaya-vijñāna. How does the afflicted mind focus on the ālaya? Because the afflicted mind considers the ālaya-vijñāna to be "I," it focuses on the ālaya as self. Alternatively, the afflicted mind may focus on other objects, but it primarily focuses on the ālaya as self, so it is said that in reality, the manas focuses on the ālaya-vijñāna. Why is it necessary to explain that the afflicted mind focuses on the ālaya-vijñāna as self? If the afflicted mind is a mind (citta), is there a mind that does not associate with mental factors (caitta)?

In order to clarify that the afflicted mind arises from the mind and possesses several characteristics, it is said that it is constantly associated with clinging to self, the view of self, pride in self, attachment to self, and so on. The afflicted mind constantly arises from the mind, therefore it possesses afflictions, namely, clinging to self, the view of self, pride in self, and attachment to self, these four characteristics arising from the mind. Therefore, it fixates on the Alaya-consciousness, thinking, "I am this." "Constantly" refers to all times except for the time of an Arhat, the Noble Path, the Cessation Attainment, as well as the time of performing virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified actions, the Non-Perception Attainment, the Non-Perception Being, mindless sleep, fainting, etc. At all times, it clings to the Alaya-consciousness as self and continuously focuses on it, therefore it is called "constantly." In this way, the afflicted mind constantly considers itself as "I am" and "mine," therefore it is actually called mind. Others say: If the afflicted mind is actually called mind, then what reason is there to call the six consciousnesses that have just ceased as mind? To answer this question: The reason why the six consciousnesses from eye-consciousness to mind-consciousness are called mind when they have just ceased is that the basis of the five consciousnesses from eye to body is known to be the five sense faculties from eye-faculty to body-faculty. Since the basis or faculty of mind-consciousness is not known, in order to make its basis known, it is merely nominally established that the previous six consciousnesses that have ceased are mind. Because those who consider themselves as self and mine are actually called mind, and the consciousness that has ceased in the previous moment is not the nature of considering oneself as self and mine, therefore it cannot actually be called mind. Not understanding the selflessness of the Alaya-consciousness as selflessness is called clinging to self. Thus, not understanding selflessness and examining the Alaya-consciousness, thinking, "This is me," is called the view of self. Because of the cause of clinging to self, the mind becomes arrogant and conceited, which is called pride in self.
