Moreover, after the time of sperm and blood in the mother's womb has passed, it arises from the womb. Initially, when individual causes and conditions come together, the eye consciousness and so on arise. Therefore, because those are absent in the womb, the body is not taken. After that, the mind consciousness that arises from karma also arises from the power of conditions. Because it arises after the eye consciousness, it is absent in the mother's womb, and only arises initially later, so the body is not taken. Others object: Indeed, at the time of blood and sperm, there is no eye consciousness and so on, because those arise from their individual causes and conditions, so the body is not taken. However, apart from those, the mind consciousness, which is the nature of fruition, arises from the condition of formation. That which is called consciousness arising from the condition of formation, that takes the body at the time of blood and sperm. As a response to this: Like this, apart from the five eye consciousnesses and so on, and the mind consciousness that arises after that, there is no other fruition consciousness, that is, the mind consciousness that arises from the condition of formation, that takes the body at the time of blood and sperm. It does not exist at all, it is absent. Why is that? Like this, if there exists a mind consciousness other than the mind consciousness that arises after the eye and so on, then it is either of the nature of virtue, or it will be of the nature of non-virtue. If others say: That mind is of the nature of virtue and non-virtue, then it is a fault. If that is the case, then it is not permissible. Like this, the consciousness that arises from the condition of formation is always of the nature of fruition, so it is always neutral. That mind, other than the six consciousnesses, because it is of the nature of virtue and non-virtue, cannot be of the nature of fruition, so it cannot be called consciousness arising from the condition of formation. Therefore, it is also not reasonable for it to take the body at the time of blood and sperm. Furthermore, according to your view, all sentient beings are a single mind-stream, therefore, the collection of the six consciousnesses also arises sequentially, not simultaneously.

(Thus) observe the arising. (The meaning) is as follows: When the consciousness of virtuous nature arises, the consciousness of non-virtuous nature does not arise; when the consciousness of non-virtuous dharma arises, the consciousness of virtuous nature and the consciousness of unspecified nature do not arise. They arise in sequence. Among them, whatever is the nature of Vipāka (karmic maturation), once they are cut off, they will not be connected again. For example, these eye faculties are the nature of Vipāka, so once they are cut off, they will not arise later. If, apart from the six entering consciousnesses, the so-called mind consciousness has the nature of Vipāka, then there would be a fault of Vipāka's nature being cut off and then arising. Why? Because consciousness is acknowledged as the nature of good and non-good, when good arises, non-good mind does not arise; when non-good arises, good mind does not arise. The mind of good and non-good is also that the previous arising of non-good mind ceases and is cut off, and then the good mind arises, so there will be a fault of discontinuity in Vipāka, so it is unreasonable. Therefore, apart from the Alaya-vijñāna (store consciousness), the Vipāka nature of mind consciousness and the characteristic of being completely unspecified do not exist, they are non-existent. Among them, the so-called taking consciousness is the taking that pervades the entire body, and it is the taking of the body without interruption, so it is called taking consciousness. The aggregates of the six entering consciousnesses definitely enter in their respective places, they do not pervade the entire body, and they do not always take the body, because they enter intermittently, so they do not take the entire body. How do they definitely enter in their respective places? The eye consciousness also only takes the place of the eye faculty, it does not take other places. Even the body consciousness only takes the body where tactile sensations arise, it does not take others, so it does not take the entire body. Entering intermittently means that among the consciousnesses that enter, after the eye consciousness arises, its continuum is cut off, and then the nose consciousness arises, the nose consciousness
