Because of arising, afflictions are the primary cause of arising in samsara. Alternatively, although those noble ones may have uncertain karma that would cause them to be born in the lower realms, because they have abandoned the afflictions that would cause them to be born in the lower realms through the path of seeing, those noble ones will not be born in the lower realms because of that. Therefore, it is also said in the sutras: "Having attained patience, there is no lower realm." The attainment of patience refers to the attainment of patience with suffering as dharma. Therefore, afflictions are the primary cause of arising in samsara. Furthermore, those arhats who are free from desire for the three realms are born in this life because of the karma they created in their previous life. Although they have abandoned afflictions in this life and have created karma in this life that would cause them to be born in the next life, that karma cannot propel those noble ones into the next life. Because they will not be born in the next life, afflictions are the root of samsara. Therefore, having abandoned afflictions, the cause of arising in samsara, one will turn away from arising in samsara. If one has not abandoned afflictions, one will not turn away from samsara. Moreover, if there is no alaya-vijnana, then it is not possible to abandon afflictions. Why? Because, like you Shravaka proponents, if you wish to abandon afflictions, you should investigate in two ways: either abandon those consciousnesses that have already manifested and entered, that is, those afflictions that are directly experiencing afflictions; or abandon those afflictions that exist as latent seeds and have not yet manifested. Since you do not accept the alaya-vijnana, neither way is reasonable. Why? Because, regarding the statement "abandoning afflictions that have already manifested," when afflictions have already manifested and the entering consciousnesses are experiencing afflictions and have become the nature of afflictions, those entering consciousnesses have become contaminated and are no longer the characteristic of the uncontaminated path. Therefore, at that time there is no path to abandon afflictions, so it is not possible to abandon afflictions. Thus it is said. If others say: Abandoning afflictions is done when afflictions have not yet manifested and are in the state of seeds. The answer is: If you do not accept that there is an alaya-vijnana, then the seeds of afflictions

also cannot be abandoned. Why? Because the five consciousnesses from eye to body do not transform into the noble path. The noble path transforms into mind consciousness. When mind consciousness transforms into the noble path, the five consciousnesses such as eye cease and disappear, and only mind consciousness exists. If the very nature of mind consciousness transforming into the noble path is said to destroy the seeds of affliction, then when the undefiled mind consciousness transforms into the characteristic of the antidote of the noble path, you do not accept at all that the alaya consciousness to be abandoned by the noble path, or other dharmas that serve as the basis and foundation for the seeds of affliction, exist. Since you do not acknowledge that the place of the seeds of affliction, the mind consciousness that has become the path, can be abandoned, affliction cannot be abandoned. Therefore, the place of the seeds also cannot be abandoned. Thus it is said. If others say that the antidote mind, that is, the mind itself, in which the imprints of affliction reside, is abandoned by the antidote mind itself, that is also unreasonable. For example, fire and water are contradictory, and where there is fire, there is no water. Similarly, antidote and affliction are incompatible. Where there is the imprint of affliction, there cannot be undefiled antidote mind. Where there is undefiled antidote mind, there cannot be the seed of affliction, so affliction cannot be abandoned. Thus it is said. If others say that that which is associated with mind and the seed of affliction does not abandon the seed of affliction, nor does it abandon it. The answer is, if you follow your view, since the seed of affliction has not been abandoned, nirvana cannot be attained, and therefore liberation from samsara is also impossible. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that the alaya consciousness, and the afflictions and near afflictions that arise together with other transforming consciousnesses other than the alaya consciousness, sow seeds in the alaya consciousness. When these seeds grow, afflictions and near afflictions arise from the alaya consciousness itself
