Since the preceding and subsequent name and form are the same, then for the connecting name and form, it is called consciousness arising from the condition of formation. Why is it that for the name and form arising from the second moment and so on, it is not called consciousness arising from the condition of formation? What is the reason for this? In this way, both the preceding and subsequent are merely name and form, so it is sufficient to call it name and form arising from the condition of formation. There is no need to examine other branches besides the consciousness branch in the twelve links of dependent origination, which is called consciousness arising from the condition of formation. The Hearers, the Vaibhashikas, said: If the consciousness connecting in the mother's womb cannot be called consciousness arising from the condition of formation, then what is called consciousness arising from the condition of formation for you Mind-Only proponents? The answer is: According to our view, there is consciousness arising from the condition of formation. In this way, due to ignorance of not understanding karma and its results, virtuous and non-virtuous actions are performed, which is called formation arising from the condition of ignorance. When performing actions, the karmic imprints impregnate the Alaya consciousness, which is called consciousness arising from the condition of formation. The Alaya consciousness with imprints connects in the mother's womb, which is called name and form arising from the condition of consciousness. In this way, there is no fault. In this way, the former's view is refuted. The Sutrantikas said: If the consciousness connecting in the mother's womb cannot be called consciousness arising from the condition of formation, then the six consciousnesses arising from the mind, produced by thought, create virtuous, non-virtuous, and immovable karmic imprints, which act as doorways for the six consciousnesses arising from the second moment and so on. In this case, it is called consciousness arising from the condition of formation, and there is no need for Alaya consciousness, is that so? The answer is: In the previous moment, the consciousnesses that can function perform virtuous actions and so on, and in the subsequent moment, the imprints are impregnated into the consciousnesses that can function, which is called formation arising from the

This so-called consciousness arising from conditions is also not valid. This view also cannot be established. Why? Because this also needs to be examined in two ways. Either the consciousness of the eye, etc., itself performs actions such as good and non-good, thereby leaving habitual imprints on itself, and is therefore considered consciousness arising from the condition of action. Or the consciousness of the eye, etc., in the previous moment performs actions, thereby leaving habitual imprints on the consciousness that arises in the later moment, and is therefore called consciousness arising from the condition of action. If it is thought in this way, neither of the two aspects can be established. How so? The consciousness of the eye, etc., itself performs actions such as good, etc., and it is impossible for itself to leave the habitual imprints of maturation and the habitual imprints of similar cause on itself. For example, just as a Brahmin's son, no matter how accustomed to softness, cannot ride on his own shoulders, it is impossible for oneself to act on oneself, therefore it is not possible to leave habitual imprints on oneself. Having said that, if someone says, if it is not possible for oneself to leave habitual imprints on oneself, then can the consciousnesses that arise in the previous moment leave habitual imprints on the consciousnesses that arise in the later moment? That is also not possible. Why? When the consciousness that arises in the previous moment performs good, etc., the consciousness that arises in the later moment has not yet arisen. What has not arisen is non-existent, therefore it is not possible for the previous moment to leave habitual imprints on the later moment. If someone says, if that is the case, then after the consciousness that arises in the later moment has arisen and reached the present moment, can the consciousnesses that arose from the previous moment leave habitual imprints on it? That is also not possible. Why? When the consciousnesses that arise in the later moment have arisen and reached the present moment, the consciousnesses that arose in the previous moment have already arisen and ceased. Because they no longer exist, who will leave the habitual imprints? It is unreasonable. Therefore, holding on to this view is also unreasonable. Let's leave it at that. The consciousnesses that arise in the previous moment give rise to the consciousnesses that arise in the later moment.

Furthermore, it is not appropriate to imprint habits on consciousness, and it refutes that the entering consciousness cannot imprint habits on itself, and acknowledges that view. If the previous moment can imprint the next moment, and it itself can imprint itself, then this view of looking at it this way cannot establish "action as the condition for consciousness." Why? Because in the absence of mind, such as in sleep and fainting, the collection of the six consciousnesses completely ceases and disappears, so the consciousnesses previously imprinted by action also cease at that time. At that time of disappearance, the six consciousnesses also cease, so consciousness cannot be imprinted with habits by action. In the absence of mind, such as in sleep, there is no consciousness imprinted by action, so there is no "action as the condition for consciousness." Without consciousness, there is no name and form. Without name and form, there are no six sense bases, and even up to old age and death. Therefore, entering into samsara is also impossible, so it also contradicts the statement of entering into samsara. Like this, if there is no Alaya consciousness, then it is also impossible to turn away from samsara. Why? The continuous arising of the five aggregates from one life to another is samsara. There are two causes for samsara: karma and afflictions. Among these two, the main cause of samsara is afflictions. Why? Because afflictions are the companions. If one is associated with afflictions, then one can rely on the power of afflictions to project the next existence; if there are no afflictions, even if there is karma, that karma cannot project the next existence. Those noble ones have seven rebirths, so it seems that karma without afflictions cannot project the next existence. Therefore, those who have seen the truth of the noble ones, such as the stream-enterers and once-returners, have karma and afflictions for up to seven rebirths. The noble ones have a maximum of seven rebirths, and there may be uncertain karma for an eighth rebirth, but there are no afflictions to be abandoned by the path in order to see the eighth rebirth, so there is no eighth rebirth.
