It is the mind consciousness with dreams. Mindless sleep is when the mind consciousness is suppressed by deep sleep and there are no dreams. During mindless sleep, fainting, and so on, the flow of entering consciousnesses is cut off and ceases. If the alaya consciousness did not exist, then when one awakens from mindless sleep, fainting, and so on, from what would the subsequent entering consciousnesses arise? It would be impossible for them to arise. Just as with the refutation of the "cessation attainment," here too, first, the mind that causes sleep to recede, and then it is interrupted by different substances of sleep, so from that initial mind arises the mind of awakening. However, if that initial mind has ceased and disappeared, then what has disappeared cannot be the cause of anything arising, so it is unreasonable. If the Sutra School says that the body and mind each plant seeds in the other, and at that time, because there is a body with sense faculties, the mind arises from the body, then one sentient being would have two streams of mind: the stream of mind arising from the body and the stream of mind arising from the mind itself. It is unreasonable to have these two. If Acharya Vasumitra says that during fainting and so on, the mind consciousness exists unclearly, so when one awakens, the entering consciousness arises from that mind consciousness, so the alaya is necessary, then the mind consciousness exists, and the aggregation of the three exists, so contact will occur. When contact occurs, feelings, perceptions, and thoughts will also occur, so at that time it cannot be said that the mind has ceased. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate through other rational arguments that the alaya consciousness exists apart from the entering consciousnesses, it is stated, "For entering and departing from samsara," meaning that because there is entering into samsara and departing from samsara, it is evident that apart from the entering consciousnesses, there exists what is called the alaya consciousness. In this regard, in the places of beings of the same kind, such as gods, the five aggregates that are taken up continuously arise and occur in a momentary stream, and this is samsara.

Furthermore, the connection of life from dying and transmigrating from similar realms such as gods to dissimilar realms is called entering samsara. Attaining the state of nirvana with remainder and attaining the state of nirvana without remainder is called turning away from samsara. Among these, entering samsara is also due to ignorance causing formations, and formations causing consciousness, and so on. It enters through the twelve links of dependent origination. If you, the Śrāvakavādins, do not accept the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna, then apart from the ālaya-vijñāna, there is no other consciousness called 'consciousness caused by formations,' therefore it is not possible to enter samsara and be born. If the Śrāvakavādins say, 'If we do not accept the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna, then there is no consciousness caused by formations, therefore there is no entering into samsara,' then even if you do not accept the ālaya-vijñāna, how can it be that because there is no consciousness caused by formations, there is no entering into samsara? The answer is, if you do not accept the ālaya-vijñāna, then regarding what is called 'consciousness caused by formations,' it can be examined in two ways: Do you examine it as the consciousness of mind spoken of by the Śrāvakavādins, which at the time of connection in the mother's womb, is called 'consciousness caused by formations'? Or do you examine it as the consciousness that enters driven by mental factors called 'citta' by the Sautrāntikas, which performs virtuous, non-virtuous, and unwavering formations, and the second moment of the entering consciousness arises, acting as the door of habituation, and that is 'consciousness caused by formations'? In either case, it is not reasonable. Among these, how do you refute the unreasonableness of the view that the consciousness of mind connecting in the mother's womb is 'consciousness caused by formations'? Like this, the formations of virtuous and non-virtuous deeds, etc., done in a previous life or in this life, are the cause of the consciousness of mind connecting in the mother's womb in the next life after death.
