Since things that are made are called "conditioned phenomena," the truth of the path is also made by causes and conditions. It is called "untainted conditioned phenomena." If, because it is made by causes and conditions, there are also tainted conditioned phenomena such as form, then what does "conditioned phenomena" refer to here? In this case, "conditioned phenomena" should be understood as referring to tainted conditioned phenomena. Alternatively, since it is said in the sutras that "the seeds of all conditioned phenomena are accumulated," it should be understood as referring to both tainted and untainted conditioned phenomena. The arising of these conditioned phenomena also arises from four conditions: the causal condition, the dominant condition, the immediately preceding condition, and the eye sense faculty condition. Among these, the causal condition is the imprint instilled in the all-ground consciousness. Although imprint and all-ground are explained here as being like a basis and a place, since what is to be instilled and what instills are not different, the all-ground itself is the causal condition of all conditioned phenomena. The dominant condition is the six sense faculties, from the eye sense faculty to the mind sense faculty. The immediately preceding condition is the six consciousnesses, such as eye consciousness, since the cessation of the previous one becomes the basis for the arising of the subsequent mind consciousness or the six consciousnesses, therefore the cessation of the previous one itself is the immediately preceding condition of the subsequent one. The objective condition is the six objects, from form to phenomena. How do conditioned phenomena appear to arise from four conditions in this way? Because it is stated in the sutras, it is apparent. It is also said in the sutra, "If the eye is not impaired and forms also appear, and the attention that produces it also abides, then from these the eye consciousness that arises from them will occur." Therefore, it is apparent that conditioned phenomena arise from four conditions. The meaning of this is that "the eye is not impaired" means that the eye sense faculty is not covered or damaged by cataracts, etc. "Forms also appear" means that the forms that are the object of the eye sense faculty are not obstructed by walls, etc. "The attention that produces it also abides" means that the immediately preceding condition is the condition that immediately produces the subsequent consciousness after the cessation of the previous consciousness, therefore it is the immediately preceding condition.

also means the immediately preceding condition. Thus, from the eye, form, and the immediately preceding condition, eye consciousness will arise, which is the meaning of the sentence. Similarly, for the ear and sound, and the immediately preceding condition, ear consciousness will arise, and the same should be applied sequentially to the subsequent cases. Question: You say that conditioned phenomena arise from four causes, while the sutras say that conditioned phenomena arise from three causes. How is this not contradictory? Answer: The causal condition, the ālaya-vijñāna (ground consciousness), exists at all times. Because it is difficult to discern, as it distinguishes the object and appearance, it is not mentioned in the sutras. Thus, after eye consciousness arises from the four conditions, the mind consciousness that seeks, "Are there a hundred vases in this room? How many are there?" arises. After the mind consciousness of seeking arises, the mind consciousness that distinguishes, "This is blue," arises. After the mind consciousness of distinguishing, the mind consciousness that discriminates, "This is indeed blue, not yellow," arises. Then, that mind consciousness also focuses on the object, and either afflictions such as desire arise, or, focusing on the object, the side of purification, such as weariness with samsara, arises. Thus, when the mind consciousness gives rise to afflictions, meritorious and non-meritorious actions, as well as unwavering formations, are manifested. When those manifested formations have manifested and those formations cease, if they are not made to cease, they instill and increase two latent tendencies in the ālaya-vijñāna. The two latent tendencies are the latent tendency of being concordant with the cause and the latent tendency of being fully ripened. Among these, the latent tendency of being concordant with the cause means that whatever action is done, a similar result will ripen. For example, if one gives in this life, in future lives one will also enjoy giving. The latent tendency of being fully ripened is that by the cause of giving, one is born among gods and humans, and the ālaya-vijñāna arises and becomes very wealthy. That ālaya
