is called the path of cultivation. At the time of Buddhahood, it is called the path of no more learning. What is meant by "not attained" is that those noble dharmas arise in the mind stream or in the stream of aggregates. Therefore, the mind stream or stream of aggregates in which the noble dharmas have not arisen is called an ordinary being. When it arises in the stream of aggregates, it is called a noble one. Therefore, the mind stream or stream of aggregates of a sentient being in whom the noble dharmas have not arisen is called an ordinary being. Those noble dharmas that arise in the stream of aggregates or mind stream are called noble ones. Therefore, the name "ordinary being" is merely imputed to the time of arising of form, mind, and mental events. It is not like the imputation of the Hearers' Abhidharma masters, that there is a separate entity called "ordinary being." Now, I will explain the non-mental formations that have similar characteristics. What is engagement? It is called engagement when the internal and external conditioned phenomena abide in the nature of an instant, the previous instant is the cause, and the later instant is the result, and the instants of cause and result arise continuously without interruption. Therefore, this is also merely imputed to the time of arising of form, mind, and mental events, and it does not exist as a substance. What is separate determination? It is called separate determination when there are various causes and various results. Various causes are the many virtuous deeds such as not killing and not stealing, which produce pleasant results. Various results are the many non-virtuous deeds such as killing and stealing, which produce unpleasant results. This separate determination is also imputed to the five aggregates, so it is merely imputed to the time of arising of form, mind, and mental events, and it does not exist as a substance. What is combination? It is called combination when the cause and result are in accordance with each other. For example, generosity combines with the result of perfect enjoyment, morality combines with going to the happy realms of gods and humans, and patience combines with becoming beautiful in appearance, so it is called combination.

. This is also established based on the five aggregates, merely established on the time of form, mind, and mental events, and there is no substance. What is quickness? It is said that the cause quickly produces the result, or that in moments, the subsequent moment arises without interruption after the previous moment, which is called quickness. This is also established based on the five aggregates, merely established on the time of form, mind, and mental events, and there is no substance. What is sequence? It is said that the cause and effect follow each other in order, which is called sequence, that is, the cause arises first, and the effect arises later. This is also established based on the five aggregates, merely established on the time of form, mind, and mental events, and there is no substance. What is time? It is said that the cause and effect are related and continuous, which is called time. How to understand it? The cause and effect arise and then cease, which is called past time. The cause and effect have not arisen and have not ceased, which is called future time. The cause and effect are arising and have not yet ceased, which is called present time. Therefore, this is also established based on the five aggregates, merely established on the time of form, mind, and mental events, and there is no substance. What is place? It is said that the aggregate of form becomes the nature of cause and effect, such as east, west, south, north, below, above, etc., the places in the ten directions, which are called place. In the eastern direction, there exists the nature of form and cause and effect, which is called the place of the east, and the same can be applied to the remaining directions. In the formless realm, because there is no form, there is no establishment of place. Therefore, this is also merely established on the time of form, and there is no substance. What is number? It is said that form, feeling, perception, mental formations, consciousness, etc., are each different, and are established as one, two, etc., as numbers. Why is this so? Because only differences can establish numbers, and for things that are not different and are of one nature, they cannot be counted as two. Therefore, this is also established based on the five aggregates, merely established on the time of form, mind, and mental events, and there is no substance. What is assembly? It is said that the causes and conditions for the arising of consciousnesses are assembled, which is established as an assembly. Therefore,

So, these are also merely existent by being imputed upon the five aggregates, but are not substantial. Thus, these non-mental formations should be understood as existing by being imputed upon the times of form, mind, and mental events. Having explained the aggregate of formations, in order to conclude, it is said, "This is called the aggregate of formations." That is, in addition to the fifty-one mental formations mentioned above, and the fourteen non-mental formations that occur within the five aggregates, adding nine similar non-mental formations, these are what is meant by the aggregate of formations. The aggregate of formations has been explained. After the aggregate of formations, the aggregate of consciousness is mentioned, so in order to enter the stage of explaining it, the question is asked, "What is consciousness?" The meaning is to ask, what is the nature and characteristic of the aggregate of consciousness? In response, it is said, "To individually cognize objects." Objects are the objects of mind and mental events, namely the six: form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena. Cognition is to grasp, understand, or comprehend those objects. Because it recognizes and knows what is to be the object, it is called cognition. That cognition of cognizing objects also has six aspects: From eye consciousness to mind consciousness, there are six entering cognitions. How do these six entering cognitions cognize objects? In this regard, eye consciousness relies on the eye sense and merely recognizes and knows form as form. Ear consciousness relies on the ear sense and merely recognizes and knows sound as sound. Nose consciousness relies on the nose sense and merely recognizes and knows smell as smell. Tongue consciousness relies on the tongue sense and merely recognizes and knows taste as taste. Body consciousness relies on the body sense and merely recognizes and knows touch as touch. Mind consciousness relies on the mind sense and recognizes and knows phenomena. Therefore, these six cognitions
