That which takes an object as its focus is called consciousness. Having thus explained the nature of consciousness, in order to show the different names for them, the terms "mind," "intellect," and "thus" are mentioned. The six entering consciousnesses are also called consciousness. Because it distinguishes through its object, it is called consciousness; it is also called mind, and also called intellect. For example, just as it is called consciousness because it distinguishes through its object, so too, it is called mind and also intellect. Furthermore, in order to show the meaning of the term "why is it called that," the words "manifold" and "because it is the support of intellect" are mentioned. The meaning of mind is the meaning of manifold, because it is showing the nature of manifold. It is called mind, and because the mind is the support for what immediately arises after it, it is also called intellect, that is the meaning. So, why are the entering consciousnesses called manifold? Thus, the entering consciousnesses are the nature of each of their respective objects, such as form, and the objects such as form are also of various natures, such as yellow and white. With regard to this, the eye consciousness that focuses on it, if it previously focuses on blue, then the appearance of blue arises; then if it focuses on yellow, then the appearance of yellow arises; then if it focuses on red, then the appearance of red arises; then if it focuses on white, then the appearance of white arises. Just as the objects are manifold, so too the consciousnesses arise in manifold ways, therefore the six consciousnesses are also called mind. In this way, the six consciousnesses are manifold because they focus on manifold objects, therefore it is said to be mind, and this is also in terms of the kind of consciousness that grasps many objects such as blue and yellow in succession in an instant. It is not said that a single instant is manifold, why? Because in a single instant, the object is definite, and the appearance is also definite, therefore there are no manifold appearances. How are the object definite and the appearance definite? At the time of an instant, it is not called manifold, because it only focuses on blue, and does not focus on yellow, and when it focuses on blue, only the appearance of blue arises, and not the appearance of yellow.

Because it is not produced, there are no varieties. The six consciousnesses rely on the mind as their immediate support, therefore it is called the mind. This mind also arises and ceases after the six consciousnesses, such as the eye, arise. Immediately after cessation, the consciousness of the mind arises, or other subsequent six consciousnesses arise. Because the previous six consciousnesses, immediately after ceasing, become the support for the arising of other subsequent consciousnesses, therefore that moment when the previous six consciousnesses cease is called the mind. Thus, after showing the nature of the six consciousnesses and the types of the eye, in order to show what is actually or mainly meant by the term 'mind,' and to show what is the main consciousness, therefore it is said, 'Actually, the mind is the Alaya-consciousness.' Because the entering consciousness is of various natures, the mind that is spoken of should not be called the main mind. Actually, in manifestation or mainly, the Alaya-consciousness is called the mind. This is the meaning to be expressed. Or, the main mind is the Alaya-consciousness, this is the meaning to be expressed. Why is the Alaya mainly called the mind? And in order to show why the Alaya is the main of all minds, therefore it is said, 'It is the accumulation of the seeds of all actions.' The meaning of 'thus' is, according to the reasons that appear below. The word 'it' is connected with the Alaya, it is the phrase 'the Alaya-consciousness it.' 'The Alaya-consciousness it' arises in a continuous stream of moments, and in each moment it accumulates and mixes the seeds of all conditioned phenomena, therefore it has the meaning of accumulation, so mainly or actually the Alaya is called the mind. How does each moment of the Alaya accumulate the seeds of conditioned phenomena? The seeds that previously existed on the Alaya are repeatedly nourished by the actions, therefore it is called the accumulation of those seeds, or the Alaya is related to and possesses the nourishment of the seeds of conditioned phenomena, therefore it is called the accumulation of those seeds. That meaning will also be explained in detail. How does this through cause and condition
