It is unreasonable to say that there is a consciousness of quiescence, called consciousness. It is said: For example, the Sravaka Sutra masters say that during cessation meditation, non-perception meditation, unconsciousness, being overwhelmed by heavy sleep, drunkenness, and fainting, although the consciousness of mind exists, it exists but does not cognize, and does not completely sever the aspect. Similarly, apart from the six entering consciousnesses, although the alaya consciousness exists, it does not cognize, and does not completely sever the aspect, it is just like that. There are three kinds of dharmas: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Among them, virtue is the eleven such as faith. Non-virtue is the six afflictions such as attachment, and the twenty near afflictions such as anger. Or, virtue is the ten virtues such as not killing. Non-virtue is the ten non-virtues such as killing. There are two kinds of neutral dharmas: uncovered neutral and covered neutral. The nature of the alaya consciousness is not the discrimination of self and what belongs to self, and it is not defiled by its impurities, therefore the nature of the alaya consciousness is uncovered, and it is not the nature of virtue and non-virtue, therefore it is neutral. It is the nature of the discrimination of self and what belongs to self, and it is defiled by its impurities, therefore it is covered. It is not the nature of virtue and non-virtue, therefore it is neutral. Thus, in the case where the four dharmas exist, is the alaya consciousness the aspect and nature of virtue? Is it the aspect and nature of non-virtue? Is it the aspect and nature of uncovered neutral? Is it the aspect and nature of covered neutral? In the answer to the question, it is said "of the same kind," etc. The six entering consciousnesses are the nature and aspect of virtue, and also the nature and aspect of non-virtue, and also the aspect and nature of neutral, therefore they are not of the same kind. How is it? If the six entering consciousnesses are associated with the eleven virtuous mental factors such as faith, then it is the nature of virtue. When the entering consciousnesses are associated with afflictions such as attachment,
