When associated with mental events arising from proximate afflictions, it is called the nature of unwholesomeness. When associated with the path of discernment and the place of crafts, etc., it is called the nature of being unspecified. The alaya-consciousness is of one kind, it is the nature of being unclouded and unspecified, it is neither the nature of goodness nor the nature of unwholesomeness, nor is it the nature of being clouded and unspecified. Because it is not defiled by the impurities of the afflicted mind that conceives of self and what belongs to self, and because it is not its nature, it is unclouded. Because it is not the nature of good and unwholesome, it is unspecified. Why? If the alaya-consciousness were of the nature of goodness, then those who do unwholesome deeds would have the fault of lacking alaya-consciousness, because those who do good deeds also have alaya-consciousness, so the alaya-consciousness is not of the nature of unwholesomeness either. If the alaya-consciousness were of the nature of unwholesomeness, then those who do good deeds would have the fault of lacking alaya-consciousness, because those who do good deeds also have alaya-consciousness, so the alaya-consciousness is not of the nature of unwholesomeness either. Because it is not the characteristic of conceiving self and what belongs to self, it is not the nature of being clouded and unspecified either. Furthermore, because the eleven wholesome mental events such as faith and the alaya-consciousness are not associated and do not coexist, it is not the nature of goodness either. Because afflictions such as desire and the mental events arising from proximate afflictions are not associated and do not coexist with the alaya-consciousness, it is not the nature of unwholesomeness either. The mental events that accompany the afflicted mind, such as self-ignorance, self-view, self-pride, and self-attachment, these four mental events are not associated and do not coexist with the alaya-consciousness, so it is not the nature of being clouded and unspecified either. That alaya-consciousness is not associated with mental events arising from wholesome minds, nor is it associated with mental events arising from unwholesome minds, nor with the mental events that accompany the afflicted mind.

If there is not even co-emergence, then with what mental factors does it correspond? It corresponds with the five omnipresent ones: attention, contact, feeling, conception, and intention. The ālaya-vijñāna arises from the causes of virtuous, non-virtuous, and unwavering actions of previous lives, therefore it is of a single, fully ripened nature, and thus is of the nature of being un-obscured and un-indicated, being of the same kind. Thus, when these five omnipresent ones also correspond with the transforming consciousness, when it corresponds with virtuous dharma, then the five omnipresent ones are also called virtuous. When the transforming consciousness corresponds with non-virtuous dharma, then the nature of the five omnipresent ones is called non-virtuous. When it corresponds with the afflicted mind, then it is called the nature of being obscured and un-indicated. When it corresponds with the ālaya-vijñāna, then it is called the nature of being un-obscured and un-indicated. Someone says: You, who speak of mere consciousness, having asserted that the ālaya-vijñāna exists at all times, since you acknowledge that the ālaya is constantly present, is this ālaya constantly present with the characteristic of being permanent and unchanging, or is it constantly present with the nature of a momentary continuum? As an answer to this question, it is stated that "it also constantly transforms," meaning that the ālaya-vijñāna, from the beginning of conception in the same kind of beings such as gods and humans, just like the transforming consciousness that flows continuously with a momentary continuum, is also not interrupted in between, therefore the ālaya is impermanent, so it is not constantly present with the characteristic of being permanent and unchanging, but is constantly present with the nature of being impermanent. How then are the transforming consciousnesses interrupted in between? For example, previously the eye consciousness arose and its continuum ceased, then the ear consciousness arose, and after arising the continuum ceased, then the eye consciousness arose again, similarly, the remaining nose and other consciousnesses should also be applied. Furthermore, the transforming consciousnesses, etc., arise with a virtuous nature by focusing on the Buddhas, etc., and seeing the forms of women and enemies, etc., and the previous nature
