If there is an ālaya-vijñāna, why was it not shown or explained to us? Answer: That is because I did not show it to the children. The term "children" refers to beings such as ordinary beings, pratyekabuddhas, and arhats. Even if there is an ālaya-vijñāna, my meaning is that I did not explain it to those children. If there is an ālaya-vijñāna, why is it not explained to the children? Answer: It is not permissible if they grasp it as "self." The meaning is that if the ālaya-vijñāna were explained, it would continue until the very end of saṃsāra, and therefore they would think, "That which is called 'self' is also it," and thus they would grasp the ālaya-vijñāna as "self." If the children were to grasp the ālaya-vijñāna as "self," it would not be permissible. Therefore, in order not to lead them to grasp it as "self," I did not explain it. In order to demonstrate the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna with two lines of reasoning, it is said, "For what reason are there the cessation attainment, the non-perception attainment, and the arising of the consciousness that cognizes objects again after arising from the state of non-perception?" Although it does not arise from the root, therefore, apart from the entering six consciousnesses, it is evident that the ālaya-vijñāna exists. This is the remaining statement without omission. Like this, if the cessation attainment, the non-perception attainment, and the entering six consciousnesses after becoming a state of non-perception are all completely ceased, then when arising from those states later, if there is no ālaya-vijñāna, from what do the entering consciousnesses arise? It is impossible for them to arise. Therefore, even at the time of arising from the cessation attainment, the non-perception attainment, and the state of non-perception, the entering consciousnesses arise and occur, so it is evident that the ālaya-vijñāna exists. As it was said, the Śrāvakavādins said: Like this, we believe that the past is also substantially existent. Therefore, for those samādhis, the initial mind of application related to cessation, which is entered into, is also considered by the later arising mind to be the immediately preceding cause. Therefore, from that cause directly related to the mind of application, at the moment of arising from that, the entering consciousnesses arise, so the ālaya-vijñāna is not necessary.

Refutation of the Vijnanavada View: First, when the initial joining mind arises and ceases, it is interrupted by many substances of absorption, so that it has been a long time since the previous moment of consciousness ceased. Later, when it arises again, how can the consciousness of absorption arise from the previously ceased consciousness? The Sravaka-Vibhajyavadins answer: The meaning of "interruption" refers to being interrupted by many similar substances, which is considered the meaning of interruption, so it cannot be a direct cause; but being interrupted by many dissimilar substances is not considered interruption, so it is considered a direct cause. Therefore, between the initial joining mind and the final arising mind, there is no interruption because the types of meditative objects are different. Therefore, when the later arising arises from the previous joining mind, the consciousness of absorption arises, so there is no contradiction. The Vijnanavadins say: It is unreasonable for the arising mind to arise from the initial joining mind. Why? Because after the initial joining mind ceases, it is interrupted by many meditative objects and has been a long time, so whatever has ceased does not exist, because it does not exist at all, so when arising from the non-existent cessation, consciousness cannot arise, just like flowers in the sky, "I" and Isvara, etc. Just as flowers in the sky, and the "I" and Isvara imagined by the heretics do not exist, so these non-existent dharmas cannot be the cause of any dharma, nor can any result arise from them. Similarly, the initial joining mind has ceased and does not exist, so the non-existent cannot be the cause of any dharma, nor can any result arise from it. In this way, the Sravaka-Vibhajyavadins are refuted. The Sautrantikas say: If the Vibhajyavadins believe that the joining mind gives rise to the cessation mind, and after the mind ceases, it is interrupted by many substances of absorption, so that when arising from the joining mind, the consciousness of absorption cannot arise, but because there are Nirodha-samapatti, Asamjnasamapatti, and the existence of the body during Asamjna, when consciousness arises again from the body, the Alaya is necessary.
