Moreover, in a single moment, birth, abiding, aging, and death all exist. These are not substances existing separately apart from the five aggregates. The substance of birth exists in a separate place, thus causing things to arise; the substance of abiding exists in a separate place, thus things are able to abide; the substance of aging exists in a separate place, thus things age; the substance of death exists in a separate place, thus things decay. To dispel this notion, aging is defined as the transformation of the continuum of the five aggregates. It cannot be said that aging occurs in a single moment, nor is there a separate substance of aging existing elsewhere; this is the meaning. Alternatively, among similar beings, after the five aggregates arise and abide in a momentary continuum, the transformation into characteristics such as white hair, hunchback, wrinkles, and reliance on a cane is called aging. To show the nature of abiding, the question is asked, "What is abiding?" This is to ask what the nature and characteristics of abiding are. In response, it is said, "Thus, their continuum follows." "Thus" refers to what was said above, that the five aggregates arise among similar beings. "Their" refers to the five aggregates. "Continuum" refers to the five aggregates abiding in a momentary nature from the moment consciousness connects in the mother's womb until death. Thus, those momentary characteristics, the latter moment following the former, and the following continuum being unbroken, is called abiding. Thus, the unbroken continuum of the five aggregates is called abiding, and therefore abiding is merely imputed at the time of form, mind, and mental events. It is not like the Sravaka Abhidharmikas who believe that abiding exists even in a single moment, and that the substance of abiding exists separately apart from the five aggregates; such an examination does not exist, this is what is being expressed. To show the nature of impermanence, the question is asked, "What is impermanence?" This is to ask what the nature and characteristics of impermanence are. In response, it is said, "Thus, their continuum ceases." "Thus" refers to above.
