Since the six consciousnesses are extinguished, it is called the cessation of the unstable mind and mental factors. Therefore, 'without perception' is also posited on the distinction of the form aggregate. Therefore, it is merely nominally existent, not substantially existent. How is it posited on the distinction of the form aggregate? There are two kinds of bodies: a body with mind and a body without mind. Thus, among the two kinds of bodies, 'without perception' is posited on the stage of a corpse where the seeds of mind and mental factors have deteriorated, therefore it is called posited on the distinction of the form aggregate. 'Without perception' is established on two things: place and attention, and it is explained through three things: person, nature, and imputation. Why are place and attention established? Just like in the meditative absorption of 'without perception,' 'without perception' does not have desire and detachment from virtuous increase, nor a higher state, therefore place is established. Just like in the meditative absorption of 'without perception,' 'without perception' does not have attention preceded by the arising perception, therefore attention is established. The latter three explain that since an ordinary person enters into 'without perception,' it is explained through person; since it is the nature of the cessation of the six consciousnesses in absorption, it is explained through nature; and it is explained by being posited on the distinction of the form aggregate. To explain the nature of the life faculty, the question is asked, 'What is the life faculty?' This is asking about the nature and characteristics of the life faculty. It is also called 'life' and 'living,' because it maintains life until death, so it is called 'life.' It exists among sentient beings of the same kind and dominates them, therefore it is called 'faculty.' As an answer to this question, it is mentioned that among those of the same kind, the time of dwelling is determined by the actions that are thrown by previous karma. 'Kind' refers to a large collection of sentient beings such as humans and gods. 'Same kind' means similar kind. How are they similar? Different realms such as gods, humans, asuras, and animals, and different causes of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, some are superior because they are thrown by previous karma.

Some engage in trade, while others, due to the force of past karma, become beggars, and so on. Each sentient being born has its own lifespan, and the continuity of their respective five aggregates is similar, which is called "similarity of kind." "In the similarity of kind" means being born in the place where sentient beings holding similar five aggregates reside. So, how does this arise? It arises from the virtuous, non-virtuous, and unwavering actions of previous lives, and thus it is called "propelled by karma." Among these, non-virtuous actions lead to rebirth in the three lower realms. Virtuous actions lead to rebirth among humans and the six desire realm gods. Unwavering actions lead to rebirth in the form and formless realms. "Activities" means the five aggregates. "Abiding" means that from the moment of initial birth until death, the continuity of the five aggregates is uninterrupted, which is called "abiding." "Definite time" means that among beings of the same kind, due to the cause of past virtuous and non-virtuous actions, some may abide for a hundred years, some may abide for a thousand years, and so on. The length of lifespan is definite, which is called "definite time," meaning some have long lifespans and some have short lifespans. For example, the continuity of the five aggregates of beings in the north that emit unpleasant sounds can last for a thousand years. This is an explanation of time, and it is called the "life faculty." Therefore, the definite time of the abiding of the five aggregates is called the life faculty. Thus, the life faculty is merely an imputation on the duration of the three: form, mind, and mental factors. It is not an independently existing entity. In order to show the nature of similarity of kind, the question is asked, "What is similarity of kind?" This is asking what the nature and characteristics of similarity of kind are. In response, it is mentioned, "Whatever sentient beings have similar bodies," that is, gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings. These five types of beings are called sentient beings. Whatever thing these sentient beings cling to as self or belonging to self is called the body. In the desire and form realms, they cling to the five aggregates as self, while in the formless realm
