The characteristic of earth is hardness, the characteristic of water is wetness, and the characteristic of fire is heat, and so on. In this regard, the nature of all phenomena cannot be indicated or expressed by words. If the characteristics of all phenomena could be expressed by words, then they would not change. Just saying the word "fire" would burn the tongue, and just saying the word "water" would quench thirst. Since merely saying "fire" does not burn the tongue, and merely saying "water" does not quench thirst, the names of all phenomena, such as earth and water, are nominally designated. Therefore, the words for the nature of all phenomena are nominal designations. Although the characteristics of all phenomena are inexpressible, the word that says "this is earth, this is water" is called "name." Therefore, this collection of names is also nominally established upon form, feeling, perception, mental formations, consciousness, and the time arising from the mind, but it does not exist as a substance. To show the nature of the collection of words, the question is asked, "What is the collection of words?" This means asking what the nature and characteristics of the collection of words are. In response, it is said, "The nominal designations of the distinctions of all phenomena." Phenomena are things like pots, blankets, forms, and sounds. The distinctions of phenomena are the specific differences of those phenomena, such as the characteristics of impermanence and suffering. The meaning of "word" is that because this "word" comprehends and shows the distinctions along with meaning, it is called "word," or because it shows and comprehends the meaning with distinctions, it is called "word." Thus, because words show the distinctions of meaning, they show that the words used in treatises are distinct from names and worldly words. How so? Names show the nature of all phenomena, while words show the distinctions of all phenomena. For example, a name merely indicates the word "person," but if a word says "fire is hot," it specifically shows the characteristic of fire being hot. If a name says "conditioned phenomena," and a word says "conditioned phenomena are impermanent," it shows the characteristic of conditioned phenomena being impermanent. Therefore, there is a difference between names and words. The words of treatises are different from worldly

It also shows that it is different from words. For example, in the phrase "Devadatta eats rice," worldly people consider "Devadatta" to be one word, "eats" to be one word, and "rice" to be one word. However, in the scriptures, "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent" is considered one word because it shows the specific meaning that "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent." Therefore, it also shows that it is different from worldly words. Someone says, the name "Devadatta" is also composed of letters such as la and ha, and the word "conditioned impermanence" is also composed of letters such as da and va. So what is the difference between these two? The answer is, although there is no difference between name and word in terms of letter combination, they can be distinguished by the difference in meaning. A name only shows the nature of things, while a word shows the difference of things. Therefore, merely showing the individual characteristics of things is called a name, while showing the difference in meaning, such as whether that thing is permanent or impermanent, is called a collection of words. Someone says, among the collection of names and words, why is the collection of words explained before the collection of names? The answer is, the basis of words such as whether things are permanent or impermanent is the name, because only by relying on the name "pot" and the name "blanket" can one say "the pot is permanent" or "the pot is impermanent." Therefore, words are explained before names. Regarding the difference of things, what is the meaning of difference? "Pot" is a name, "the pot is impermanent" is a difference, or "the pot is permanent" is a difference. Alternatively, saying that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, understanding that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, and that unconditioned phenomena that do not conform to this are not impermanent, using impermanence etc. to show permanence, the word that shows the difference of things is called the word of difference of things. So, what is this word? It is like saying: "All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all phenomena are without self, peace is nirvana," and so on.
