This absence is peace. It is excellent. It is arising. Thus, by refuting all thoughts and entering into samadhi after that, it is called the mind that precedes the thought of arising. This samadhi without thought is the path to becoming liberated. Its result is that among the gods called Great Fruit, being born as a sentient being without thought is liberation, not nirvana. Thus, by first contemplating and then preventing the mind and mental factors such as thought, it is called the mind that precedes the thought of arising. There are two types of mind and mental factors: unstable and stable. Among them, the six consciousnesses from eye consciousness to mind consciousness are called unstable mind and mental factors. Why? Because when consciousness enters into samadhi, and when there is samadhi without thought, and when there is samadhi without mind, and when there is fainting without mind, and when one is overwhelmed by deep sleep, etc., even during those times of no mind, they are interrupted and do not exist. And even when there is mind, when one focuses on virtue, non-virtuous mind and neutral mind do not remain and do not exist. When one focuses on non-virtue, virtuous mind and neutral mind do not remain and do not exist. When one focuses on neutrality, virtuous mind and non-virtuous mind do not remain and do not exist. Therefore, the six entering consciousnesses are called unstable mind and mental factors. The alaya-consciousness and the afflicted mind are called stable mind and mental factors. Why? Although the alaya-consciousness becomes non-existent when one attains Arhatship, it still exists during all times of no mind, such as in the cessation samadhi, the samadhi without thought, and fainting without mind. And it is always present when there is mind, when the mind is focused on virtue and non-virtue, etc. Therefore, it is called stable mind and mental factors. The afflicted mind is also present during the time of the truth of the path of no outflow, and during the cessation samadhi.

and the times of no learning, they do not exist, but they exist at all times other than that, so they are called steadfast mind and mental factors. In this way, from the force of meaning, it becomes like this: if it is said that there is no afflicted mind at the time of the unpolluted path, then it is shown that there is an afflicted mind at the time of the path of the polluted worldly people. If it is said that there is no afflicted mind at the time of cessation attainment, then it is shown that there is an afflicted mind at the time of unconscious attainment and unconscious existence. If it is said that there is no afflicted mind at the time of no learning, then it is shown that there is at the time of learning. Thus, there are two kinds of mind and mental factors, existing and not existing. Then, at the time of unconscious attainment, what mind and mental factors cease? Therefore, it is said, "Which of the impermanent dharmas of mind and mental factors cease?" That is to say, each ordinary yogi first refutes the thought by saying, "Thought is a thorn, thought is a disease." With the intention of refuting thought, the mind immediately generates a body that is incompatible and contradictory to the arising of two and so on. From then on, the body that is incompatible with the arising of other minds, from eye consciousness to mind consciousness, the six aggregates of consciousness, together with the retinue of mental factors, become obstacles to arising, completely preventing their arising, so it is said, "Which of the impermanent dharmas of mind and mental factors cease?" In this way, the six aggregates of body consciousness, together with mental factors, are called unconscious attainment because the cause is blocked, and this is also established only on the difference of the time of the form realm, and there is no substance. In order to show the nature of cessation attainment, the question is asked, "What is cessation attainment?" This is the meaning of asking what is the nature and characteristics of cessation attainment. In response, it is said, "Free from desire for the sphere of nothingness, going upwards from the peak of existence." That is to say, in the formless realm there are four spheres, namely the sphere of infinite space.
