Regret for having done something is unspecified regret. Of the three types of regret, unwholesome regret and unspecified regret arise from the aspect of ignorance, while those regrets arise from the aspect of non-ignorance, so it should be understood that they are not substantial but exist as imputed. Its function is to cause the mind to be at ease and to be discordant. If regret or suffering arises in the mind, it hinders the mind from abiding single-pointedly in samadhi. In order to show the nature of sleep, the question is asked: What is sleep? This is asking what the nature and characteristics of sleep are. In response, it is said, "Entering without autonomy, the mind manifestly withdrawing." Entering refers to the mind entering and focusing on objects such as form. Because one is overcome by sleep, the mind has no autonomy to enter external objects, hence it is called without autonomy. Because the mind has no autonomy to enter objects and the mind cannot hold the body, the body will fall to the ground, which is called sleep. It is not only sleep that causes the mind to be without autonomy, but there are other situations as well. For example, when one is struck by a stick and faints, the mind also cannot autonomously enter external objects and cannot hold the body. Therefore, to prevent the assumption that fainting is also sleep, the phrase "the mind manifestly withdrawing" is stated. The meaning of "the mind manifestly withdrawing" is that the mind does not enter external objects through the gates of the senses such as the eyes, but rather the mind is withdrawn inward. It is not only sleep that causes the mind to withdraw inward, but also during cessation and the absorption of non-discrimination, the mind also withdraws inward. Therefore, to prevent the assumption that cessation and the absorption of non-discrimination are also sleep, the word "without autonomy" is stated. Whatever causes the mind to be without autonomy and also causes the mind to withdraw inward, that is called sleep. Sleep also has three types: wholesome, unwholesome, and unspecified. Among them, dreaming of performing virtuous deeds is wholesome sleep. Dreaming of unwholesome deeds such as killing is unwholesome sleep.

If one dreams of doing sewing and other work, that is uncharacterized sleep. Or, if one falls asleep from thinking of virtuous deeds such as giving, that is virtuous sleep. If one falls asleep from thinking of evil deeds such as killing, that is unvirtuous sleep. If one falls asleep from thinking of sewing and other work, that is uncharacterized sleep. Or, if the mind is overcome by sleep from thinking of virtuous deeds, that is called unvirtuous sleep. If the mind is overcome by sleep from thinking of unvirtuous deeds, that is called virtuous sleep. If the mind is overcome by sleep from thinking of uncharacterized deeds, that sleep is called uncharacterized. The causes of sleep are weakness, fatigue, the arrival of spring, being full of food and the body feeling heavy, and thinking of the appearance of darkness, from which sleep will arise. This sleep also arises from the aspect of ignorance, so it should be understood that it does not exist substantially, but exists nominally. Some say that unvirtuous sleep and uncharacterized sleep arise from the aspect of ignorance, but virtuous sleep does not arise from the aspect of ignorance. The function of this is to be the basis for things not being accomplished, because after falling asleep, all the things to be done will not be accomplished and will decline. In order to show the nature of discrimination, the question is asked, what is discrimination? This is asking what the nature and characteristics of discrimination are. In response, searching is the expression of mind. It is said that the difference between mind and wisdom is that mind is coarser. For example, regarding something, whether it is pottery or wool, or what it is, just roughly thinking about it, entering into that state is called searching. Searching is also the expression of mind, meaning the discrimination of the nature of consciousness. The so-called expression of mind means making the mind speak. For example, just as language says this is wool, this is a vase, so consciousness also makes the mind say this is wool, this is a vase, the mind is speaking, the mind is discriminating, this is called the expression of mind.
