Since it arises from the part of ignorance, it should be understood that it exists nominally, not substantially. Because desire and hatred do not arise simultaneously, either one is distracted by desire and ignorance, or one should know that one is distracted by hatred and ignorance. Its function is also to obstruct detachment from desire, because for those whose minds are distracted by the merits of the five desires, it obstructs and hinders the abandonment of desire for the three realms. In the Sutras, distraction is explained as six types. The six types of distraction are: distraction by nature, external distraction, internal distraction, distraction by signs, distraction by bad states, and distraction by attention. Among them, the collection of the five consciousnesses from eye consciousness to body consciousness is called distraction by nature, because the nature of these five consciousnesses is that they cannot be focused on one object internally. When entering virtuous Dharma, the mind scatters to the merits of the five desires, this is called external distraction. When entering Samadhi, the mind is controlled by lethargy and agitation, this is called internal distraction. If one cultivates virtuous practices such as Samadhi, and enters virtuous Dharma because one hopes that others will think of oneself as a virtuous person, this is called distraction by signs. When cultivating Samadhi, the arising of attachment to self and what belongs to self is called distraction by bad states. Having previously cultivated one Samadhi, and then cultivating another Samadhi, this is called distraction by attention. Although only external distraction among the six distractions is mentioned here, it should be known that other distractions are also characteristics of distraction. In order to show the nature of non-alertness, the question is asked what is non-alertness, meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristic of non-alertness. As an answer, it is said, "Wisdom that is fully in accordance with afflictions, that is, acting without control over the actions of body, speech, and mind," that is, wisdom and desire.

Wisdom accompanied by afflictions such as hatred, controlled by afflictions, and mixed with afflictions is called wisdom fully associated with afflictions. Thus, because wisdom is controlled by afflictions, one does not know, regarding bodily actions such as walking, standing, sitting, and lying down; verbal actions such as speaking and not speaking; and mental actions such as thinking and not thinking, "I am doing this now." Not knowing the objects of what should and should not be done is called lack of mindfulness. This also arises from the aspect of ignorance, so it is not substantial but should be understood as imputed. Its function is to serve as a basis for the occurrence of faults, because one does not know what should and should not be done through the doors of body, speech, and mind, and therefore constantly produces faults and downfalls. The near afflictions have been explained. The fourth will be explained elsewhere, in order to show the nature of regret. If asked, what is regret? This question asks what the nature and characteristics of regret are. The answer is: remorse in the mind. That is, regarding non-virtuous actions such as killing, thinking "I did something bad," and afterwards feeling pain and regret in the mind; regarding virtuous actions such as giving, thinking "I did not do well," and afterwards being displeased and feeling regret in the mind; regarding actions such as sewing, thinking "I did something bad" or "I did not do well," and afterwards feeling pain and regret in the mind, this is called regret. Regret also has three aspects: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Among them, regarding virtuous actions such as giving, thinking "I did something non-virtuous" or "I did something wrong," this regret is non-virtuous regret. Or, regarding not doing non-virtuous actions such as killing, thinking "I did something bad," this regret is also non-virtuous regret. Regarding doing non-virtuous actions such as killing, thinking "I did something wrong" or "I did something bad," this regret is virtuous regret. Or, regarding not doing virtuous actions such as giving, thinking "I did something bad," these regrets are all virtuous regrets. Regarding not doing actions such as sewing, thinking "I did something bad," or feeling
