Having faith, one can attain Nirvana. One can practice the Noble Path, and whatever desire arises is called faith. Lack of faith means not believing in actions and their results, nor in the truth, and not considering the Three Jewels, etc., as having virtues, with no joy in the heart. Since there is no desire for Nirvana and the Noble Path, lack of faith is called the opposite of faith. This (lack of faith) also arises from the aspect of ignorance, so it does not exist substantially, but should be understood as nominally existent. Its function is to be the basis of laziness, for when there is lack of faith, due to the power of lack of faith, one does not want to engage in listening, contemplation, and other virtuous deeds, thus becoming the basis of laziness. To show the nature of laziness, the question is asked: What is laziness? This means asking what the nature and characteristics of laziness are. The answer is: Not taking joy in virtue, it is the opposite of diligence. It means being attached to the pleasure of sleeping and the pleasure of idle talk, and from the doors of body, speech, and mind, not taking joy in doing virtuous deeds such as listening and contemplation, and not wanting to engage the mind in virtuous actions, this is called laziness. The opposite of diligence means that taking joy in practicing virtuous deeds is called diligence, while laziness is not having joy in doing virtuous deeds, so it is the opposite of diligence. This (laziness) also arises from the aspect of ignorance, so it does not exist substantially, but should be understood as nominally existent. Its function is to create obstacles to the thorough cultivation of the side of virtue. To show the nature of heedlessness, the question is asked: What is heedlessness? This means asking what the nature and characteristics of heedlessness are. The answer is: Attachment, hatred, ignorance, and laziness, all of these, not guarding the mind from afflictions, and not cultivating virtue. It means that under the influence of these four dharmas—attachment, hatred, ignorance, and laziness—or dwelling and relying on these four dharmas, the mind enters into afflictions such as attachment without guarding or preventing it, and one does not cultivate virtuous dharmas such as faith, this is called heedlessness. This (heedlessness) also

I am desire, hatred, ignorance, and laziness. These four dharmas arise from a portion, so they are not substantial, but exist nominally, and should be known. Its function is to serve as a basis for the increase of non-virtue and the decline of virtue, because if the mind is engaged in non-virtue and is not protected, non-virtue will increase. In order to show the nature of the decline of mindfulness, the question is asked, "What is the decline of mindfulness?" meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristics of the decline of mindfulness. In response to this, it is said: "Mindfulness is afflicted, and the mind is not clear about virtue." This means that any mindfulness that is associated with afflictions such as desire, hatred, and ignorance is called afflicted mindfulness. Its lack of clarity of mind about virtue is like how beings accustomed to honey and syrup are unable to eat bitter foods such as tikta. Any mindfulness that is associated with afflictions such as desire, and whose mind remembers the objects of desire such as women, but whose mind is not clear about virtue, and does not remember virtuous thoughts such as correct teachings, and becomes forgetful, is called the decline of mindfulness. This also arises from a portion of ignorance, so it is not substantial, but exists nominally, and should be known. Its function is to serve as a basis for distraction, because those whose mindfulness has declined only engage their minds in afflicted objects such as women. In order to show the nature of distraction, the question is asked, "What is distraction?" meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristics of distraction. In response to this, it is said: "Due to the power of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the mind is distracted by the five desirable qualities." The five desirable qualities are form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Because the portion of desire, hatred, and ignorance acts as a cause, when the mind is focused single-pointedly in samadhi, or when thinking about virtuous dharmas such as hearing, the mind wanders to the objects of the five desires such as form, and the mind becomes distracted, which is called distraction. This is also desire, hatred, and igno-
