To show and proclaim in another way that one possesses qualities, and to show and proclaim in an untrue way that one is not wise but pretends to be wise, is called 'deceit'. This also, because of the elements of attachment and ignorance, shows and proclaims as having qualities even though one does not have qualities, therefore it arises from the elements of attachment and ignorance, so it should be known that it does not exist in essence but exists as an imputation. Its function is to be the basis of wrong livelihood, that is, even though one does not have qualities, one pretends to have qualities through the means of body and speech, and uses deceit to seek robes and bedding, etc., therefore it is called the basis of wrong livelihood. In order to show the nature of deceit, the question is asked, 'What is deceit?' meaning what is the nature and characteristic of deceit? In response, it is mentioned, 'Taking the means to conceal one's own faults, that is, being deceitful in mind.' The faults committed by oneself, such as killing, are one's own faults. Concealing one's own faults is hiding or concealing one's own faults. If asked in what way faults are concealed, the answer is 'taking means', meaning faults are concealed by taking means. Taking means means confusing others. For example, when others ask if you have committed such a fault, one diverts the conversation from one thing to another, or speaks unclearly, making it impossible to determine whether one has committed the fault, or speaks in a way that is incomprehensible, this is called deceit. Those who are associated with deceit do not think straight and do not speak straight, so they are called deceitful in mind. This also arises from attachment to gain and respect, and from ignorance of not knowing that concealing faults will lead to suffering, therefore it arises from the elements of attachment and ignorance, so it should be known that it does not exist in essence but exists as an imputation. Its function is also to be an obstacle to obtaining correct instruction, that is, the Khenpo and Acharya will not give correct instruction to those who conceal faults with deceit and attachment, and even those who have previously received instruction, because of having deceit, do not pay attention properly.

Because it is done by the wrong path, it becomes an obstacle to obtaining true teachings, so it is called a wrongdoer. It is said: Concealment is also concealing one's own faults, and deception is also taking methods to conceal one's own sins, since both are concealing sins, what is the difference? It is said: Concealment is directly and openly saying that I have not committed a crime, thereby concealing the fault, while deception is not directly and openly saying that I have not done it, but using methods to make it look like it has not been done to conceal the sin, so there is a difference. In order to show the nature of arrogance, ask what is arrogance, meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristics of arrogance. As an answer to this question, it is said, "Clinging to one's own perfection, completely grasping with a very happy mind," one's own perfection refers to the wealth one possesses, that is, a great lineage, a healthy body, a beautiful appearance, youthful years, great strength, power, wealth, wisdom, quick-wittedness, etc., surpassing others, excelling, and being outstanding, is called one's own perfection. Clinging to one's own perfection mentioned by name, and being reluctant to let go, this is clinging, clinging to, means taking clinging as the cause. With a very happy mind, it means having a satisfied mind, or having a conceited mind, or having a mind with the difference of pleasure. In order to show that meaning, it is said to completely grasp with the mind, that is, clinging to one's own perfection, making the mind involuntarily with a conceited mind, merely clinging to the accumulation of enjoyment and not letting go, making it impossible for the mind of virtue to enter, this is called arrogance. This also arises from the part of greed, so know that it is not real but nominal. Its function is also to serve as the basis for the arising of all afflictions, because of arrogance, six afflictions and other near afflictions will arise. In order to show the nature of harm, ask what is harm, meaning the nature of harm
