The Vaibhashikas consider even the near afflictions to be substantially existent, but the Mind-Only school, with its view of consciousness-only, considers the near afflictions to arise from the parts of the six afflictions, so these are only nominally existent and not substantially existent, it should be understood. In order to show the nature of anger, the question is asked, "What is anger?" meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristic of anger. In response, it is stated, "Abiding in immediate harm, harming with the mind," which means that grasping "immediate harm" negates harm done in the past and future, referring to harming in the present moment. Harming means making sentient and non-sentient beings displeased and unhappy. "Abiding" means harming and contacting. "Harming with the mind" means that after sentient and non-sentient beings are immediately harmed and contacted, the mind thinks of harming sentient and non-sentient beings, and this is anger. Saying "harming with the mind" negates harming with the body, because harming with the body is the result of anger, so it cannot be called anger. This anger also arises from the part of hatred, so it should be understood as nominally existent and not substantially existent. Its function is to serve as the basis for actions such as striking with a stick, because after anger arises, it will inevitably lead to striking and binding sentient beings. In order to show the nature of holding a grudge, the question is asked, "What is holding a grudge?" meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristic of holding a grudge. In response, it is stated, "Holding a knot," meaning that first one encounters displeasure or is harmed, then anger arises, and then after anger, one thinks, "This person has harmed me in this way, I will not let it go until I have retaliated," constantly thinking hateful thoughts in the mind, holding a knot in the mind and not letting go, and this is holding a grudge. Or thinking, "This person harmed me in the past, harms me now, and will harm me in the future, this

Previously harmed the friend of the landowner, is harming now, and will harm in the future. This one previously bestowed benefit on my enemy, is bestowing benefit now, and will bestow benefit in the future, therefore thinking that one must harm this one, and continuously not abandoning the thought of hatred, this is called holding a grudge. This also arises from a portion of hatred, therefore it should be known as existing imputedly, not substantially. Its function is to be the basis for intolerance, because it causes harm, whatever is done is intolerable, and wanting to cause harm to that person in the future, therefore its function is said to be the basis for intolerance. In order to show the nature of concealment, the question is asked, what is concealment? The meaning is asking what is the nature and characteristic of concealment? In response to that, it is stated, it is concealing one's own faults. Faults are actions of sin such as killing. Being exposed by a Khenpo or teacher etc. Not being controlled by desire, hatred and ignorance etc., but speaking out of fear, if this person does not confess sins, it will become a cause of suffering, therefore wanting to benefit him, not exposing him in front of many people, but seizing the opportunity to say, you have done such a sin, or because of not understanding that not confessing sins will become a cause of suffering, being controlled by ignorance, saying that I have not committed sins, thus not concealing the faults committed, but denying them, this is called concealment. This also arises from a portion of ignorance, therefore it should be known as existing imputedly, not substantially. Its function is also twofold, namely to be the basis for regret and uneasiness. According to the rule, whoever conceals faults, regret will arise for them. Having arisen regret, because of not being able to eat, one will become mentally disturbed, therefore one will also become uneasy. In order to show the nature of harsh speech, the question is asked, what is harsh speech? The meaning is asking what is the nature and characteristic of harsh speech? In response to that, it is stated, it is precisely uttering harsh words. Harsh words refer to extremely unpleasant words, that is, whatever words are spoken, other sentient beings

Harsh words that strike at the heart and cause displeasure are called coarse language. For example, just as being bitten by a venomous snake harms the body, first one encounters harm caused by others. Then one becomes angry. Then one holds a grudge. Then, using harsh words that mention caste and lineage, one reproaches others and causes them displeasure, this is called anger. This also arises from a part of anger, so it is not existent in essence, but merely nominally established. Its function is twofold: to utter evil words and to cause unease. Uttering evil words is to utter harsh words that mention caste and lineage, etc. Causing unease is because the person who speaks evil words and the other people who live with him will also become uneasy. To show the nature of jealousy, one asks: What is jealousy? The meaning is to ask what the nature and characteristics of jealousy are. In response, it is said: To be particularly disturbed in mind by the perfections of others. The perfections of others refer to the wealth of others, that is, other beings possessing gains such as Dharma robes, being honored with prostrations, etc., and possessing qualities such as high caste, discipline, and learning. To be particularly disturbed in mind means that due to a part of hatred, the mind becomes unbearable, seeing that others possess gains and honor, and qualities such as caste, discipline, and learning, one is displeased with this and the mind is disturbed and unbearable, this is called jealousy. This also arises from a part of hatred, so it should be known that it is not existent in essence, but merely nominally established. Its function is to serve as a basis for unease, because the one who possesses jealousy sees that others have qualities, and at all times causes his own mind to generate unease and disturbance. To show the nature of stinginess, one asks: What is stinginess? The meaning is to ask what the nature and characteristics of stinginess are. In response, it is said to be a mind incompatible with giving.
