Having said that, if discipline and asceticism are the cause of purification, why is it said to cling to discipline and asceticism? Answer: Discipline and asceticism that possess correct views are the cause of liberation, therefore, it should not be said to cling to discipline and asceticism. Discipline and asceticism that are completely grasped by the view of the aggregates, the view of extremes, or wrong views are not the cause of liberation, but the cause of bondage, therefore they are called clinging to discipline and asceticism. The function of this (clinging to discipline and asceticism) is also to make the result of exhausting the body meaningless, that is, even if one observes discipline and asceticism that are in accordance with wrong views, one will not attain liberation, therefore it is called making the result of exhausting the body meaningless. Among these five views, which views are of the nature of exaggeration, and which views are of the nature of denial? Among the view of the aggregates and the view of extremes, the view of permanence, the view of holding views, and the view of holding to discipline and asceticism are of the nature of exaggeration. Wrong views and the view of annihilation from the view of extremes are of the nature of denial. In order to show the nature of doubt, it is asked, what is doubt? This is asking what is the nature and essence of doubt. The answer is: To have doubts about the truth and so on. The truth refers to the four noble truths such as suffering. And so on includes karma and its results, as well as the Three Jewels and so on. To be uncertain is like having two thoughts about a pile of stones and a scarecrow at a crossroads, that is, having two thoughts about anything. For example, at a crossroads, hesitating and not knowing whether the road to the city of Mathura is this one or not; or, for example, about a scarecrow, hesitating and not knowing whether it is a scarecrow or a real person. Similarly, regarding karma and its results, the truth and the Three Jewels, etc., hesitating and not knowing whether they exist or not, this hesitation is called doubt. Its function is to not enter the side of virtue, becoming an obstacle, that is, if there is doubt,

In order not to constantly enter the side of decline. Having explained the nature and function of the six afflictions, now this should be analyzed: How many of the six afflictions are solely produced by imputation? How many are both co-emergent and imputational? In response, it is said that those that arise from hearing the teachings of others and immediately contemplating them are called imputational. Those that have arisen naturally from beginningless samsara are called co-emergent. As an answer to this, it is mentioned that among these afflictions, the lower three views and doubt are imputational. The term "these afflictions" refers to the six: desire, anger, pride, ignorance, view, and doubt. The lower three views refer to three of the five views: the view of the aggregates as a self, the view of extremes, the wrong view, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding ethical conduct and asceticism as supreme. From these five views, the wrong view, the view of holding views as supreme, and the view of holding ethical conduct and asceticism as supreme are called the lower three views. These three views also arise from hearing the teachings of others and immediately contemplating them, and therefore are said to arise from imputation. Doubt also arises from hearing the teachings of others and immediately contemplating them, and therefore is called imputational. The remainder are both co-emergent and imputational. After explaining the three views and doubt, the remainder are desire, anger, ignorance, pride, the view of the aggregates as a self, and the view of extremes. These have both co-emergent and imputational aspects. Among them, those that have naturally existed from beginningless samsara, such as desire, anger, ignorance, pride, the view of the aggregates as a self, and the view of extremes, are called co-emergent. Those that arise from hearing the teachings of others and immediately contemplating them, such as desire, anger, ignorance, pride, the view of the aggregates as a self, and the view of extremes, are imputational. The six afflictions have been explained. Now the near afflictions will be explained. Among them, the Shravaka
