In order to show the nature of conceit. If someone asks, what is the conceit of discipline and asceticism? It means asking, what is the nature and characteristics of the conceit of discipline and asceticism? As an answer to this question, it is to regard discipline and asceticism, and the aggregates that are their place, as being able to purify and liberate, and to correctly follow and observe them. This is what is called wisdom with afflictions. Among them, to turn back from doing non-virtuous deeds such as killing is discipline. Shaving the head, wandering naked, etc., maintaining bodily postures, abstaining from food, and maintaining the behavior of cows and dogs, etc., is asceticism. Discipline and asceticism also arise depending on the five aggregates, because the cause of the arising of discipline and asceticism is the five aggregates, so the five aggregates are called their place. Relying on discipline and asceticism, and the aggregates that are their place, believing that one can eliminate and purify the sins of killing, etc., is to correctly follow and observe. Believing that discipline and asceticism and these aggregates can liberate from the bonds of afflictions such as desire is to correctly follow and observe liberation. Believing that discipline and asceticism and the aggregates of their place can liberate from samsara and attain the path of nirvana is called correctly following and observing liberation. In short, believing that relying on discipline and asceticism and the aggregates of their place, one can be liberated from samsara and attain nirvana, is called the conceit of discipline and asceticism. For those who have ignorance and are deluded, they will think that they can be liberated only by relying on discipline and asceticism, but for those who do not have ignorance and have wisdom, they will not think that they can be liberated only by relying on discipline and asceticism. Therefore, this conceit of discipline and asceticism is called wisdom with afflictions because it has ignorance. It is said: In the sutras of the Blessed One, it is said that relying on discipline, cultivating samadhi, generating wisdom, and thus attaining liberation.
