I, taking the faults of things that are not objects of merit as merit, and being proud in my heart, is called wrong pride. It is said: In the case of manifest pride, one is proud in one's heart, thinking that one has attained the distinction of the superior, even though one has not attained it. And this wrong pride is also being proud in one's heart, thinking that one possesses qualities even though one does not possess them. Since both are being proud of having what one does not have, what is the difference? It is said: In the case of manifest pride, one relies on a little confidence and is proud, thinking, "I have attained everything." Wrong pride, however, has no confidence at all, and is proud, thinking that one has qualities when one has faults, so there is a difference. In order to show the nature of ignorance, one asks, "What is ignorance?" It is actually asking what the nature and characteristics of ignorance are. In response to that, it is said that not knowing karma and its results, the truth, and the Three Jewels is ignorance. Among them, karma is of three kinds: meritorious karma, non-meritorious karma, and unwavering karma. Results are of two kinds: pleasant and unpleasant. Among them, being born in the happy realms of gods and humans is pleasant. Being born in the three lower realms is unpleasant. Alternatively, there are four results: the result of entering the stream, the result of returning once, the result of not returning, and the result of being an Arhat. There are four truths: suffering, origin, cessation, and path. There are three jewels: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Not realizing or understanding that those things mentioned by name exist, or not realizing or understanding the characteristics of those things, is called ignorance. In order to show how many kinds of ignorance there are, it is said that it also has two kinds: innate and imputed. Among them, the word "also" is connected to ignorance, meaning that ignorance also has two kinds. That is, innate ignorance and imputed ignorance. Among them, ignorance that is not connected to other afflictions and is not mixed is innate.

It is also called ignorance. Not understanding and not knowing that karma and its results, the truths, and the Three Jewels exist is coemergent ignorance. Ignorance that is mixed and associated with other afflictions such as doubt, wrong views, holding to discipline and vows, pride, desire, and anger is imputational ignorance. Among these, doubting whether merit, non-merit, and unwavering actions exist is ignorance mixed with doubt, which is also called imputational ignorance. Denying that merit, non-merit, and unwavering actions exist is ignorance mixed with wrong views, which is also called imputational ignorance. Giving and keeping vows are meritorious actions, but perceiving giving and keeping vows as non-meritorious, and perceiving non-meritorious actions such as killing animals for sacrifice and throwing oneself into fire as meritorious, and then killing animals for sacrifice and throwing oneself into fire, thinking that one will be reborn in the higher realms, and thinking that liberation can be attained through discipline and short-term asceticism, when liberation is attained through practicing the noble path based on discipline, is ignorance combined with holding to discipline and vows and pride, which is also called imputational ignorance. Generating desire by observing beautiful things and generating hatred by observing enemies is also imputational ignorance. The function of ignorance is threefold: wrong determination, generating doubt, and giving rise to the place where all afflictions arise. Among these, wrong determination is because of the power of ignorance, grasping impermanence as permanence and grasping selflessness as self. Generating doubt is because of the power of ignorance, causing doubt about whether karma and its results exist or not. Serving as the basis for the arising of all afflictions is because desire, anger, and other afflictions arise from the existence of ignorance.
