English

The three of " ಪ್ರಮಾಣ " (pramāṇa, valid cognition) are called "reason" (hetu). The wisdom arising from hearing, contemplating, and meditating on these three reasons is called wisdom born of reason. Having abandoned all afflictions and all sufferings, and having become accustomed to the words spoken by it, then the words of a person who becomes one who abandons afflictions are called infallible scripture. That which exists in inference, exists in agreement with the class, and does not exist in disagreement with the class, is called the valid cognition to be inferred. Among them, that which exists in inference is like inferring that where smoke rises, there is fire. That which exists in agreement with the class, where smoke rises, why is fire visible? For example, seeing smoke rising in a large kitchen, it appears that there is fire there. That which does not exist in disagreement with the class is incompatible with fire and water. Therefore, where there is fire, there is smoke, but where there is water, smoke does not rise. Direct perception is like seeing a pot directly with the eye sense. That is also the mind of a yogi and the consciousness of the senses, as well as mental consciousness, and the objects of mind and mental factors, each knowing by its own nature, are fourfold. What is called non-reason is non-infallible scripture and apparent inference, and wrong meditative stabilization, which is called non-reason. The wisdom arising from hearing, contemplating, and meditating on these three is called wisdom born of non-reason. Among them, the cause of falsehood is not abandoning all afflictions and not abandoning all sufferings, and even if one meditates on its words, one will not be able to abandon afflictions. The words of the Samkhya and Vaisheshika heretics, etc., are called non-infallible scripture. Apparent inference is not the actual object of inference, but is similar to inference by signs. For example, inferring that because one fruit on the branch of this mango tree is ripe, all are ripe. Wrong meditative stabilization is focusing one's mind one-pointedly on a dharma that teaches self where there is no-self. What is the wisdom that is neither born of reason nor born of non-reason?

The wisdom gained immediately upon birth, and the wisdom of knowing various crafts in the world, such as sewing. Its function is to dispel doubt. Wisdom clearly distinguishes the individual and general characteristics of all phenomena, correctly recognizing them, thereby eliminating doubts such as "Is it like this? Or is it not like this?" The determination of the five objects has already been explained. Next, the eleven virtues will be explained. In order to show the nature of faith, the question is asked, "What is faith?" This means asking what the nature and essence of faith are. The answer is: To have deep and unwavering faith in actions and their results, happiness, and the Three Jewels. Among these, actions are of three types: meritorious actions, non-meritorious actions, and unwavering actions. Meritorious actions refer to virtuous actions that belong to the desire realm, specifically the ten virtuous actions such as refraining from killing. Non-meritorious actions also refer to non-virtuous actions that belong to the desire realm, specifically the ten non-virtuous actions such as killing. Unwavering actions refer to the nature of virtuous actions of the four concentrations belonging to the form realm and the four formless absorptions belonging to the formless realm. Because they constantly abide in concentration, they cannot be shaken or disturbed by the wind of discursive thoughts, hence they are called unwavering actions. Alternatively, if one first performs a virtuous or non-virtuous action in the desire realm, and a result arises, and then later performs another action, the result of the previous action will be shifted by the later action, causing the result of the later action to ripen, just as ripening involves change. However, if one first performs an action belonging to the form or formless realm, and a result arises, then no matter what action is performed later, the result of the previous action will ripen, and the later action cannot shift the result of the previous action, hence it is called unwavering action. There are two types of results: pleasing and displeasing. Displeasing results refer to hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals. Pleasing results refer to gods and humans. Among these, if one performs non-meritorious actions belonging to the desire realm, then one will experience the results in the three lower realms.

will ripen. By performing meritorious deeds belonging to the desire realm, one will obtain the desired fruits of gods and humans in the desire realm itself. By performing virtuous deeds of immovability belonging to the form and formless realms, one will obtain the desired fruits of gods in the form and formless realms. Therefore, if one performs virtuous deeds, desirable fruits will ripen, and if one performs non-virtuous deeds, undesirable fruits will ripen. Believing that both karma and its results exist, and having firm faith that these two exist, is called faith. Truth is of four kinds: the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. Among these, the five aggregates of clinging, such as form, which are produced by karma and afflictions as a result, are called the truth of suffering. Because they are not mistaken or inverted in their characteristics of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness, they are called truth. The two, karma and afflictions, are called the truth of origin. Because they are not mistaken or inverted in their characteristics of cause, origin, condition, and arising, they are called truth. Abandoning karma and afflictions, and also stopping the five aggregates of clinging, is called the truth of cessation. Because it is not inverted or mistaken in its characteristics of cessation, peace, excellence, and definite arising, it is called truth. The method for attaining it, the eightfold noble path, is called the truth of the path. Because it is not inverted or mistaken in its characteristics of path, reason, practice, and arising from it, it is called truth. Therefore, for the truth of suffering and the truth of origin, having firm faith that there is suffering and there is an origin; for the truth of cessation and the truth of the path, having firm faith that cessation can be attained and the path can be practiced, is called faith. The so-called Three Jewels are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. These three are like precious jewels.
