Because it makes it into a defilement, it is called a near affliction. The four are "others also," that is, the four from regret to investigation are called "others also," because these four are not only the nature of near afflictions, but also have the nature of virtue, also have the nature of non-virtue, and also have the nature of the unspecified, so they are called "others also." Now I will explain the nature of the non-associated formations. As stated in the treatise of the Thirty Verses and the treatise of the Abhidharma-samuccaya, the nature and function of the fifty-one mental factors are the same. Because discussing the treatise of the five aggregates is for the purpose of taming knowledge, it is only briefly explained, only the nature is stated and not the function. However, in order to make the students proficient in the nature of the Dharma, and to easily understand the nature of these mental factors, I will explain both the nature and the function. Among the five omnipresent ones, feeling and perception have already been mentioned above, so there is no need to say more, now I will talk about contact, attention, and thought. In order to show the nature of contact, I asked, "What is contact?" meaning to ask what is the nature or characteristic of contact. In response, it is said, "The three gather and decide," the three refer to the sense faculty, the object, and the consciousness. The gathering of these things as cause and effect is called aggregation, the object, sense faculty, and consciousness are the cause, and the contact arising from that cause is the effect, the mental factor arising from the cause of the three aggregates is called contact. Among them, when the object, sense faculty, and consciousness gather at the same time, at that moment, it can cause the arising of the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and neither pleasure nor pain, or be in accordance with the arising of the three feelings, or like the cause of the arising of feelings, the sense faculty completely transforms. Just as the sense faculty transforms to give rise to pleasant feelings, etc., or is in accordance with the arising of pleasant feelings, etc., or like the cause of the arising of feelings, the object and pleasant feelings, etc., arise

Then, conforming and completely transforming, or like the cause of the arising of feeling, what is the aspect of the object that is completely transformed, thereby cutting off, this is called contact. Its function is to be the support of feeling, meaning it is the cause of the arising of feeling. Therefore, it is also said in the sutra that feeling arises from the condition of contact, and in other sutras it is said that relying on the contact that experiences feeling, pleasant feeling arises. In order to show the nature of attention, ask what is attention, meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristic of attention. The answer is that it is the mind's engagement. Engagement means that the mind goes to the object or observes there, therefore, for any object to be meditated upon, such as the difference of the object, etc., the mind clearly observes and tends towards it, so it is called the mind's engagement, and that which does so is called attention. Its function is to hold the mind on the object. What is the meaning of holding the mind on the object? It means that for objects such as skeletons, the mind repeatedly dwells, this is called holding the mind on the object. Therefore, for the object of focus, the mind's momentary continuum focuses on it, this is said to be its function. If the mind focuses on it in one moment, and in the second moment, etc., focuses on another moment, then it is not considered its function. In order to show the nature of thinking, ask what is thinking, meaning to ask what is the nature and characteristic of thinking. The answer is that the mind clearly fabricates for merit, demerit, and neither, this is the function of the mind. Among them, virtuous dharmas are merit, non-virtuous dharmas are called demerit, and unspecified dharmas are called neither. The meaning of the mind clearly fabricating is the meaning of the mind shaking and moving. If the mind does nothing and does not shake, then the mental factor called thinking arises and motivates, the mind also clearly fabricates for virtue, and also engages in doing virtue, the mind also clearly...
