Those who have renounced also hold onto the root of disputes from views, namely, clinging to self and the inverted perceptions such as clinging to permanence, so these two are separately established as individual aggregates. The cause of samsara is two kinds of individuals: those who engage in craving and those who engage in views. Those who engage in craving revolve in samsara due to attachment to feelings, while those who engage in views revolve in samsara due to inverted perceptions such as perceiving self in what is selfless. Therefore, since these two are the cause of samsara, they are explained separately as individual aggregates. Someone asked: If, other than feeling and perception, mental factors such as contact and non-mental factors such as acquisition are explained here as the aggregate of formation, it contradicts the sutras. Because the sutras also say, what is the aggregate of formation? It is the six groups of thoughts, that is, the thought arising from the total contact of the eye, up to the thought arising from the total contact of the mind. This contradicts the sutras. The answer is that the sutra speaks of the six thoughts as the aggregate of formation, which is based on the principal aspect, so there is no contradiction. How is it the principal aspect? Thought is the principal because it manifestly forms and moves the mind. By the power of thought, the mind can also enter into virtue, and the mind can also enter into non-virtue, and the mind can also enter into the indeterminate. Attention and so on also follow and arise after thought, so it should be understood that the sutra only mentions the six groups of thoughts, but others are also mentioned incidentally. Taking the principal aspect as an example is like saying that the king has arrived, even if it is not said that other attendants will come, those people will also definitely come. In the aggregate of formation, both mental factors and non-mental factors are included, but it is not known what mental factors actually refer to. In order to show this, the question is asked: What are mental factors? Then the answer is given: All dharmas that are associated with the mind are mental factors. They are born from the mind and come from the mind, so they are called mental factors.
