It is said that it is neither suffering nor happiness. If feelings are classified, there are three types: pleasant feelings, painful feelings, and feelings that are neither painful nor pleasant. It is said that pleasant feelings and painful feelings are clearly manifested in one's own cognition. Apart from these two, how can it be shown that there is a feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful? The answer is: This comes from the words of the Blessed One, and through rational analysis, it is also evident that there is a feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful. What comes from the scriptures is that the Abhidharma-kosa says that there are three kinds of feelings: pleasant feelings, painful feelings, and feelings that are neither pleasant nor painful. Furthermore, other sutras say that abandoning pleasure and also abandoning pain, initially both joy and displeasure cease, experiencing feelings that are neither pleasant nor painful, abiding in the fourth dhyana. Through rational analysis, it is also known that it is impossible for a mind to arise that is always separated from feelings, but at times, neither pleasant feelings nor painful feelings arise, and the mind is focused on the object. Therefore, in this case, it should be recognized that what arises is a feeling that is neither pleasant nor painful. In order to explain the characteristic of pleasant feelings, it is said that pleasure is wanting to separate from something and wanting to meet with something. It means that for something that one will be separated from after meeting with it, and wanting to meet with it again, that is a pleasant feeling. "Separation" means leaving. In order to explain the characteristic of painful feelings, it is said that pain is wanting to separate from something that has arisen. It means that for something that one has met with, and wanting to separate from it later, not wanting to meet again, that is a painful feeling. In order to explain the characteristic of feelings that are neither painful nor pleasant, it is said that neither painful nor pleasant is not wanting either. It means that for something that one meets with, one does not want to separate, and for something that one separates from, one does not want to meet again.

The feeling that does not arise, which is neither suffering nor happiness, is called the feeling of neither suffering nor happiness. Alternatively, when encountering anything, not wanting to be separated, and when separated, wanting to meet again, the arising of this thought is the feeling of happiness. When encountering anything, wanting to be separated, and when separated, not wanting to meet again, that is the feeling of suffering. Equanimity is as previously stated. Alternatively, the feeling of happiness is because it strengthens the body, stabilizes the mind, and is in accordance with the mind, so one experiences it, and even if it ceases, the desire to meet it again arises. The feeling of suffering is because it weakens the body, weakens the mind, and is unpleasant, so it causes harm, and even if one encounters it, the desire to separate again arises. The feeling that is neither suffering nor happiness, unlike the feeling of suffering, does not harm the body and mind and is unpleasant; nor does it benefit the body and is pleasant like the feeling of happiness, therefore, even if one encounters it, the desire to separate does not arise, and even if separated, the desire to meet does not arise. The explanation of the aggregate of feeling is complete. After the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception is mentioned, so now is the time to explain it. Therefore, the question "What is perception?" is asked, meaning to ask "What is the definition of the aggregate of perception?" In order to reveal its definition, it is mentioned that "taking the mark of an object," where "object" refers to the five objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and so on. The definition of "object" lies in the difference of the object, such as blue, yellow, red, and so on. "Taking the mark" refers to distinguishing, that is, thinking "This is blue, not yellow." Someone asks: Then, what is the difference between eye consciousness and perception? The answer is: Generally, knowing only "shape" is eye consciousness. But distinguishing "shape, but this is blue, not yellow" is perception, therefore there is a difference between them. In order to show how many kinds of the aggregate of perception there are if divided, it is mentioned that "It has three kinds, namely subtle, vast, and immeasurable."
